Apparently I was wrong about the gather points - here's the update.

It would appear that I shared incorrect information on my earlier post about why the person with no articles/photos has points.

I was corrected by a few members who have been here longer than I and know more.

They said that her points come from page views (her viewing other people's work)and people viewing her profile page.

I stand corrected.

My bad.

Just wanted to let you all know in case you didn't go back to the original article.

Hey, don't worry about it. From what I read, nobody really knows how the points are figured except for the people who do the figuring and they are NOT telling. LOL

I don't think you were totally wrong. Loving Wife did a test a couple of days ago, put up a post and asked for no comments only page views. Evidently it didn't earn her many, if any, points.

I see the biggest impact to my points when I leave lots of comments.

I agree with Katherine -- leaving comments tends to earn more points. I think the reason behind this is that I leave you a comment, then you tend to leave me back a comment, then I return the comment, and you return that one . . . . either way, be it page views or comments, we are definitely getting something done here. LOL.

I think the reason Gather doesn't tell us specifically is to keep us honest - we should see what we want to see, read what we want to read, comment....etc., and from some algorithm we'll get points. If they told us exactly what increased our points would we do anything else? (example: triple points for photos....)

Donna I think it is a big mystery to everyone. Other then the fact that Tom said that comments do not earn points page views do that is all we know. We don't know how many views per point or if viewing certian things earn more then other etc.. I look at it like this. I find things I want to read and comment which people tend to comment back on my content which means page views.

I had a friend that became active but didn't post for some time.....out of curiosity I asked her if she was getting points with nothing posted and she was.

The page views that directly earn points for you come from other people viewing your pages. And the more interesting posts you have, the more page views you will receive. The indirect way that page views can contribute to your points is by you viewing someone else's post and leaving an interesting comment; another member who sees that comment and clicks on your member name (in blue at the bottom of the comment) has now viewed your profile and may continue on to read your posts, which gives you more page views. The algorithm that Gather uses to calculate exactly how many points are awarded for these things is not static- it changes with the amount of advertising dollars they have available to spend.

Donna, I'm sure everyone appreciates your efforts to shed light on how to generate more points- especially at the holidays when people want to use them for gifts.

I only passed along what I was told directly by a Gather staff member. I hate to think that people would spend inordinate amounts of time trying to "beat the system" only to find their method is inaccurate.

Yep, page views seem correct. I have done a bit of experimenting, and this is the conclusion I have come to as well.

Nancy - Viewing other peoples content earns them points but also earns you points directly. My husband was a member who did nothing but view. He never commented or posted for a while before he posted his first article and earned points. He is still currently a member but does nothing but view right now and he still earns points.

Jr - I have also done some experiments too after Tom told us about it being the page views not comments. My experiments confirmed what he said also.

Maybe it's just a vicious cycle that Gather doesn't ever want us to figure out. We can speculate all we want, but in the end, we really should be here using the site as a place to communicate with people, rather than a place to earn points... even though the site says when you join, that in the long run, if you participate enough there's a full time income potential here? LOL... who knows!!
