I Have Confirmed Information Regarding How Points Are Earned

There are some articles I just don't know what do say, so I just say a little to let them know I did come to their article. If I have something more to say, I have no qualms about saying it.

I agree with Lisa Frost... If I'm not sure what to say or think every photo is adorabe, I try to post something similar, but to the point, Very pretty. Love the green or Adorable or Lovely, within the same meaning or sometimes, I type big, long comments on photo's/article's and I thought those comments would get deleted or not be as much thought about compared to the other small ones are easier to read for the person receiving comments

I don't know for sure but that sounds logical. I seem to remember someone saying a long time ago that this worked but I thought they re-did the points system since then. I have no idea, really. I just Gather my fool head off. LOL.

i believe one day we will know, but then if we do, it would not be fun anymore... cuz everyone would just get his points as fast as they can... hm that did not make sense at all... i dont know

Yep, that's correct, though you might never hear it from Gather. And posting a few articles surely doesn't hurt, to give people something to comment about. I don't leave generic comments either and have seen my $$'s go up without posting anything new at all - BUT, and people also need to understand this, when you comment thoughtfully on another's article, people tend to respond to that -- why? Because you cared enough to think what you were going to say right through.
Besides, quality's always better than quantity! *smile*

thanks for the information. I have often wondered if you truly do get points for commenting, but I post articles and rate articles as well so it is hard to see where the points are coming from.

I have noticed that the more I comment on others' posts, the faster the points rack up. If I just simply post my own content and sit back, nothing really happens. So, I think your theory is correct! :)

I suspect there is a minimum number of words in a comment before they start really gaining any points ... but have no proof. I think your word "meaningful" says it all.

That is definitely interesting information, and it really does seem to make sense, at least in the sense that it encourages thoughtful interaction, which is something I'd guess the site would want to promote. Thank you for sharing your insight. Much appreciated.

I see quite a few members with hardly any photos, and few to little posts, but lots of comments. But I don't see how many points they have, and I don't ask either. How it works is the mystery. Have your spouse sign up, and do nothing but comment for a month and see what happens? There are ways to test the theory.

I knew commenting had to play a big part in the calculation of points. The more I comment the faster point accumulate and I don't always leave long comments. It depends on the post, photo etc.

I have been assured by a Gather staff member that it is NOT true that you get points for leaving comments- short or long. But you do get points from people visiting your profile page (no, you can't visit your own and get points) which may result from leaving interesting comments at numerous posts; people will "follow you home" to find out about the person who left the comment.

And page views count towards points- ratings do not.

Interesting Donna. I believe I have been one of those that shared the - be active, submit work and have conversations, and enjoy yourself - philosophy of Gathering with you. Two major points of having a good Gather experience is to be active and enjoy yourself. I think a lot of the point-whores on Gather forget the "enjoy yourself" part and drive not only themselves, but everyone else, crazy with their obsessions with pointy thingies™. And of course this obsession grows with the approaching holidays.

The Corner Office at Gather won't tell you what gets pointy thingies™ or how many pointy thingies™ you get for doing something, except for certain promotions; but, they have made statements several times that doing this or doing that earns nothing. Their current mantra is "page-views" is the only thing that rings up the pointy thingies™. It's open for debate whether such proclamations are accurate or propaganda, but that is the company line.

Now as far as the pointy thingies™ earned by your informant, it is possible that what Gather states is actually true - it's page-views. Credit for viewing can be a two-way street, both the content poster and the viewer receiving benefit from a page-view. For a member that does not post content and only performs the act of commenting, they still could be rewarded for the page-views. Within this article there is no definitive evidence that commenting earns pointy thingies™ because in order to comment, a member would have made a page-view.

Pointy thingies™ aside, commenting is what makes the community thrive, it is the "social" component of social networking, and without comments the whole community would collapse! So whether or not you receive pointy thingies™ directly for commenting, we all to keep our community healthy and active by communicating and giving each other meaningful comments.

very interesting article. i recently did an experiment where i did no commenting for an entire day, but just viewed posts and photos. my points went up big time. i think the points are based on how many page views you do and how many your content gets. but this is just a guess on my part. i have been in a contest for the last couple of weeks, so i have been gathering alot. i have noticed my points are going through the roof since i started in the contest. but it's nothing but viewing and commenting all day long.

Wow, I agree with what has been said. I know that sites like Mylot tend to award people for leaving "meaningful responses" more than people who just post a few words. And, I have confirmed that. It's possible that's what is happening here.

I've been on here for about a year and a half. I've heard hundreds of theories and none of them seem to be absolutely accurate. I do know that if I just relax, do what I feel like doing and comment on what I find interesting I do okay. Then again, I don't really count on points. They're nice but they're not the reason I'm on Gather.

There are better ways to make money.

Thanks for posting that is really interesting. I must admit that I usually do not post long responses with my kids it is hard to get a long enough to sit down. LOL I like the points but mostly I am on gather for adult conversation. My hubby works long hours so sometimes I need a break from my lovely children. I will have to remember to try and make longer responses. ;)

That is very interesting Donna, I knew there were point, wasn’t sure how to get them, or who to ask. But then again, I really didn’t join for points anyway. I guess point are a bonus!

Gather tells us, that it's not comments or ratings but views that earn us points.

That is bcause it is not about commenting it is about the page views. She earns points everytime she clicks on an article, photo, etc. This is exactly what Tom ( the CEO) said.

Funny, most replies to your post seem longer than usual. I don't post, don't collect points for a reason and don't know how to do pictures, sooo.....I just enjoy Gather. Chris, can I transfer my points to another Gather friend?

I really do not care for generic comments that seem to be popular. Mostly I comment on photographs, but not snapshots. I tend to be a snob that way.

Why is this so remarkable?

I was here for two years before I posted a single article, video, or more than a couple of icon pictures, and I got points. The pickings may be pretty slim around here sometimes, but some people just like to read and occasionally comment. I know it's hard to believe but some people don't care about points, either.

I've been earning poings, and the main thing I've been doing is leaving comments.

There must be some trick to this all. I read and comment a lot, and I never seem to earn a gosh darn thing. Ok, yes, I get a card about once a quarter if I am lucky. I do get frustrated with the point system, but mostly, I try and ignore it as much as I can.

Someone has the system figured out, however, because I hear of people getting tremendous amounts of points and cash. How? It's still a mystery to me.

I have been commenting on Amy's stuff all day and comment speedway content and my points went way up. On other days I post content and get hundreds of responses combined but maybe ten points all day so I think it is the commenting that definitely does it.

I agree with Sharon Sugarmamma - I mean really, who cares?

Yes, I've noticed the same thing. I've only been on gather for a little while, but I saw something... the first few days I posted a few articles and got a few comments. I got a few points. The next few days I posted comments on articles that had large numbers of comments already (articles like this one) and my points total started skyrocketing (comparatively.) Just saying.

I think, but am not certain, that you get triple points if you comment on articles that Sandy Knauer published before 2008.

This is an interesting topic that seems to be floating around quite a bit. I'm a newbie here, so as much as I'm enjoying the site itself, i'm also trying to learn how to maximize my points without driving myself crazy. Good to know that views are just as well earned as comments... ?

I think the points might be on a revolving system. Some days you get points for commenting. Some days it's rating, and other days it page views etc...always revolving, and never being devulged as to what it is for the day.

Just a guess.

I think I'll run an experiment, and post the results, when I'm through.

It's all a mystery to me. I've been so busy that I haven't spent the time on Gather I used to. I hate to post something if I don't feel I'll have the time to respond to those who respond to me.

What piques my curiosity, Donna, is how did you find out that this member who you didn't know very well even had any points? Wouldn't she have to share that information with you? Did you ask her?

Ha, Susan.....hmmm......I never really thought about it that way. I just told her that I had seen many posts around here where people wondered if one would have any points if one had no posts. Since she had no posts, I just asked her if she had any points. She offered the amount of points, I never asked. So, I suppose that would be a little like my asking her if she had any weight, and she offered how much weight she had.

Actually I asked her if she minded my asking, and she was very nice about it and said she was honored that I asked.

Oh, I was just teasing about the comparison between asking ones weight and asking about points. I really was curious about how you found out the information, though. Thanks so much for sharing.

I used to not care about the points; I really didn't. But suddenly I realized that I could buy gifts for others with them and now I care. :-)

Now I know why I got simple, two-word comments. I wondered why the comments were so concise; now I know it was for points. Very interesting. I don't usually comment unless I have something meaningful to say. I don't pay attention to the points...good thing, I have very few.

I like to read about different people and their articles but usually leave some small comment even though I did not join for points but to meet friends. Guess I feel there is a secret mirror everyone can look through and catch me if I don't comment and their feelings will be hurt...LOL. Seriously, I have enjoyed my time here and all the diversity of gathering so many new friends.
