I am missing my mom really bad this year. She's been gone for 14 years now. The one thing she always did for me at Christmas time, was make sure I had a Christmas stocking. I don't know why...but I love Christmas stockings. Not so much for the candy...but the little goodies that are wrapped up inside. No matter how inexpensive they were. I got so much pleasure from them.
Over the years a few friends have surprised me with one. One year I got two! Whoohoo!!! I wouldn't care if I got 14 this year! That would be one for every year that she's been gone.
I have gotten anything from books, money, jewelry, CD's, plaques, doggie treats for my dogs, and bath oils and soaps...in my stockings. You name it! It's probably been in one of them. I don't always get one every year. But I remember wanting one so bad one year and didn't think I was going to get one. But a friend from New Hampshire mailed me a large gift box and when I opened it on Christmas morning...I literally screamed and jumped all around the house!!! I think my neighbors thought I was being attacked!!! It was the biggest Christmas stocking I had ever gotten and it was filled with so many wonderful things, even for my dogs too!!!
Again...I don't know why I get so excited over Christmas stockings...but even at my age...I still do!
Which reminds me of a story I have to share. Not about stockings...but it's still a good story.
One year...shortly after my mom passed. I was in college that year and the night before Christmas Eve, I remember watching Highway to Heaven, where Michael Landon played the angel Jonathon Smith. I was thinking that there was only one thing I wanted that year for Christmas and that was a silver bracelet.
After seeing the show...I remember saying to myself that I wished there was an angel called Jonathon Smith and a Santa Clause, because I would only ask for one thing and that would be a silver bracelet.
Well...the next morning on Christmas Eve I had classes for half a day. When I returned home from classes there was a gift bag hanging on my door. All it said on the card was: "To Teresa."
What made this gift bag so special, was that the outside of the gift bag had angels on it and the tissue paper had Santa Clause's all over it. How ironic that the two people I wished were real were on my wrapping paper?
The bag smelled so pretty and I wanted something to open for Christmas, so I decided to wait until the next day. I even waited until that afternoon, because I wanted the element of surprise to last a little while longer. I am patient like that... Once a gift is opened, than the fun of wondering what it is...is gone forever!
When I finally peeked inside...there was a chinese yellow, silk, scented pouch at the bottom of the bag and inside the pouch was a silver wrist bangle braclet. Again!!! I screamed!!! How could anyone know??? I had told no one the day before and no one but God was in the room when I made the wish. A pretty cool miracle I would have to say.
Even though...I know I told you all my wish for this year. It would be cool if it would come true anyway. Because I miss my mom so much! And getting a stocking would make it seem like she was still here with me. Maybe God will let her send me one?
So...Jonathon Smith and Santa Clause...if you are still out there... I commission you to go get my stocking from my mom, so it can arrive in time for Christmas! Make sure you send her my love and thanks...when you pick it up from her...too!

i loved my stockings from my mom too
and miss them alot too
I miss the "stockings" that I used to get from my grandmother. It was really a gift bag, but it was filled with all sorts of stuff that you use throughout the year, like Qtips, band aids, razors, etc. It was so much fun to see what she would put in there and she was with me every time I used something from it.
I have started the tradition anew with Art's daughters. They still think that it is kind of weird, but I am sure that it will grow on them.
Keep warm and safe!
Did you ever find out who sent it to you? That was awesome.
Happy Holidays. Paying it forward.
paying it forward, and thank you, Teresa.
