It is annoying. I've had that problem while knitting. The way it's wound, it seems to get looser in the middle. I usually wind my skeins into balls before I knit, if it's wool. If cotton, I usually don't bother.

It sometimes comes right out of the skein like that, too. What a pain. Yeah, winding them into balls seems to help with wool and acrylic.

it's important to let the skein rotate freely. As you progress, you are undoing the twist that was put into the yarn by the machinery that rolled the yarn up. Obviously, you aren't going to untwist it exactly the same way. So it needs to be allowed to unravel naturally. If you don't, you can amplify the twist, leading to loops and eventually, knots.

My grandmother told me that there is a right way to start pulling the yarn from the skein and a wrong way, which causes the knots. I was never able to figure out how to be sure of the "right" way, so I always unwind it and ball it up first.

When I did a lot of knitting and crochetting, I used to pull the yarn from the middle of the skein, there is usually (or was) a little piece sticking out, and then I didn't run into the knotting. But a lot of people do wind their yarn into balls first, easier I guess in the long run, enjoy yourself,

LOL, Glad to find out I'm not the only one everyone! I usually pull it from the middle using the piece sticking out the end, but it never fails, it tangles up... LOL
SO, from now on, I'll just roll it into a ball to begin with! ;)

I hate when that happens! Do you pull the starting end from the middle of the skein? I really hate crocheting from a ball of yarn, can't make it stay in one place, lol!
