It had to happen. Someone, somewhere was bound to do it. Then it happened.
The mother of the teenage suicide victim wrote on MySpace, ''My son, Abraham Biggs Jr, was well-loved and cared for. However, the mental illness of bipolarity and depression got the better part of him."
Though many online knew of the boy's intentions after he posted the announcement of his suicide on his blog, no one did anything in an attempt to stop him, and in fact even spurred the boy on, ridiculing him for having "cried wolf" before, so they didn't believe he was serious this time either.
It is a sad story, made even more sad by the very public nature of the suicide, broadcast live around the world. How many people saw the suicide live, no one knows of course, but you can be certain the people that were taunting him were probably watching, waiting to hurl more hate the boy's way when, as they believe he would do-- simply change his mind, and cause himself no harm.
If I had known of this boy's intentions, or-- stated intentions, I don't know what I would have done.
On the one hand, as a rational human being, simple instinct would probably trigger the "I'd better do something" response. Then again, if you were aware this boy had declare the same thing many times before, how seriously would you take another threat?
I just don't know what I would do, were I faced with such circumstances. My guess is I would blow it off, perhaps even become one of the hecklers, if I knew the kid had threatened to do the same things many times in the past.
But if I had no past knowledge, or history of behavior for the person in question, if it was my first contact with such a situation, I think I would probably call the police in the area where the would-be suicide victim lived.
I just can't say for sure what I would do; can you?

But I think we should all act for saving that one person who needs saved.
Sam, I have no idea of course, but my guess would be no, not without an audience....
If this attitude had prevailed, maybe this poor boy wouldn't have lost his precious life!!!! Don't take me wrong! I'm not blaming anyone, just giving my opinion on the matter!!!!
I am not one to egg people on. I also do not believe everything I see.
With society the way it is, with reality tv and weirdos thinking it is fun to trick people......
This was a man who no longer wanted to live in the world of mental health. Do you have bi-polar, any form of schizophrenia? Autism? It is no fun and the way society still feels about the mentally ill is a huge shame!
I hope this mentally ill man is finally at peace that he could not find in our society.
My sister was also mentally ill. Sccizo-affective disorder. She killed herself as well.
My my Mario, aren't we the cynic....
Yes, they just watched, while the boy slipped away. It took several hours for the boy to die after injesting the pills. They knew what town the boy lived in, and the police could easily have been called.
The web host is easily discovered as well, simply do a "whois" search for the domain name and it will tell you what company hosts the live feed-- but even that wasn't a problem, as everyone knew what company was doing the broadcast as well. This company could have easily been called at any time during the threat phase, as well as the actual suicide.
I'm quite certain there is a TOS for using their service, and I doubt if a live suicide is among the acceptable ways of using the website.
Entertained ???? You want the person committing suicide to do a song and dance while his life slips away ???
First you suggest the boy had few "hits" and then in the next sentence you say there is NO WAY the web host could police THOUSANDS of visitors......
Which is it Mario, few hits, or thousands ????
Your response is idiotic.
I believe that is exactly what I would do, call the police in the appropriate jurisdiction, if it is known. Like most things, we can tell how we think we would act but never know until the time comes, if ever.
