As A Child - What Did You Buy Your Mother For Christmas?
A couple of people in the Gather network have posted articles asking what our favorite perfumes are? I love perfumes. This sent me harking back to another time and another era when funds were very limited and I was a young child. I usually had $1.00 to spend and that $1.00 was supposed to be enough to buy presents for everyone. I didn't care about buying a present for anyone but my mother and I knew exactly what to buy. The local five and dime store carried "Evening In Paris" perfume in big royal blue bottles for 99ยข each (no tax). I remember the bottles being really big so they were probably an 8 oz. size. My mother was the recipient of many a bottle of this sweet smelling perfume from me. She was always surprised when she opened her present from me on Christmas morning and would always, always say "Thank you, it's just what I wanted".
My question is, "As a child, what did you buy your Mother for Christmas"?

Things like that
I also made stuff for her. I don't remember what I made when I was really young, probably whatever we made in school. In middle school, I did a lot of crafts with Indian beads(seed beads) and made a few things with those, like coasters, a coin bag, etc.
and they always broke or ripped

Back in the 60s I remember asking Dad what Mom wanted for Christmas and he told me that she wanted an automatic can opener. She was tired of having to open cans manually. I had a dollar allowance and I knew that I wouldn't be able to buy her one but he offered to sell it to me for 25 cents so I could say it was from me.
Knick knacks
When I went shopping with her the rest of the year, I would pay attention to what she looked at.
The earrings were tiny "gold" swards with a red "ruby" where they crossed. I remember thinking they were beautiful and meeting the postman every day to see if they had come yet. In those days it took two long weeks, not the 8 weeks it takes now. I was so excited and these earrings came in a snap lid box like a ring box. Can you imagine for two box tops and a quarter? We sure used to get our money's worth in THOSE days.
When my mother opened the package she gasped and said with surprise, "Sandra, these are very beautiful, they are so tiny and the stone is so pretty." I was in heaven because my family of uncle, mother, and grandmother had really instilled the love of giving in me. To see my mother's face and know that she loved MY gift was the best present I received every year of my life.
thank you for sharing!!
