Today I bought a snack from the fast food drive-through window. The girl who took my order was from India. We had a mild communication problem because her English was heavily accented and I speak Texan. As I was driving away, I was thinking how diverse my little town was becoming. The Exxon clerk is from West Africa, the Chevron clerk from Bosnia and I'd seen a Muslim mommy and her kids at the Dollar Tree. I was feeling really lucky when it hit me. I really am tolerant.
I've always said I enjoy different cultures and it's true. I had worried because I'm annoyed at businesses who hire employees without basic English skills to deal with the public. I was afraid that might show some subconscious prejudice on my part. I've decided it's my dislike for inefficient business practices. Some things should just be obvious to every manager.
A few months ago we were in a restaurant and I noticed an Eastern Indian family leaving, an Oriental group still dining, along with couples and families who were Hispanic, black and mixed. It was a multi-cultural group in our little city. It wasn't that way when I was growing up, so it still delights me.

I'm glad our generation will be dying off soon enough, because I don't see our kids having those issues.
A ten I leave you~ To help you reach your Gather goal..
I married a dark Hispanic and have dark Hispanic children. One of the things I noticed over and over again was that the whites rarely noticed, or at least didn't often mention the difference in my color and my children's. Ethnic groups always noticed and asked.
but I do despise getting on a customer service call and not being able to understand the person on the other end
But then, we ALL have a hard time understanding Texans.
