During his interview on "60 Minutes" president-elect Barack Obama mentioned a book that he'd been reading on FDR's first 100 Days. He did not name the book, tantalizing publishers that had such books on the shelves. After all, the mere mention of a book by Obama could lead to dancing - best seller!
Turns out that the prize went to two authors, Jonathan Alter and Jean Edward Smith. He'd been reading them both on FDR.
Bingo.
Some people have all the luck. However, a week or so earlier, the New York Times asked people to suggest what books Obama OUGHT TO BE reading, and here came the (truly gifted) writer John W. Cassell. He wrote in and suggested "The Bathsheba Deadline" as MUST READING. Well, until we find Obama with that book of mine (and riches to follow) I thought I'd present a portion of "The Bathsheba Deadline" that in fact touches on FDR. From page 154 of the paperback version, here goes:
Â
"Nothing stops a real novelist, and the novel Sammy's got going is real, the one about the Holocaust and all those Jewish lives that were lost at our expense. Cures for cancer and a hundred other diseases went up in the chimneys of Auschwitz, and we were silent, and silent again when the ship St. Louis came around and got turned back. Sam's focus is on the St. Louis and on a scientist patterned after Hermann Strauss, a beloved teacher at Berlin University, and a world-class researcher who, on the verge of a breakthrough for cancer, was tortured at Therseienstadt and took his own life en route to Auschwitz.
"Sam (for his novel) was particularly fascinated in the true story of Talmudic giant Rabbi Eliezer Silver who, at the onset of the Holocaust, was not silent but founded Va'ad Hatzollo, an international rescue mission, and at Silver's urging some 300 rabbis from around the world, back in 1943, marched to the White House in an effort to get FDR to save the Jews, but FDR was on more important business. [Golfing, we are told.]
"Silver traveled throughout Europe to personally save as many sons and daughters of Jacob as he could. He could not be stopped even in churches and nunneries and orphanages and relocation camps where he was told to move on as there were no Jewish children kept here, to which Silver loudly sang out the Sh'ma (Judaism's signature liturgy) - Hear O Israel, The Lord Is Our God, The Lord Is One - and suddenly a hundred voices sang up and joined him word for word in the Hebrew, Sh'ma Yisrael Adonay Eloheinu Adonay Echad.
"Rabbi Silver did his traveling, on ships, trains, planes, jeeps, all in the uniform of his son, Nathan, cardiologist, medic and captain in Patton's Third Army. As Dr. Nathan saved thousands of fellow American soldiers on the field of battle, in his role as physician, his father, the rabbi, is credited with saving more than 10,000 Jews, mostly children."
The rest of the story is right there in "The Bathsheba Deadline." Quick, before Obama gets his hands on it first.
Jack Engelhard's latest novel, THE BATHSHEBA DEADLINE, now in paperback, places journalism at the center of our culture, politics and war on terror. Engelhard wrote the international bestselling novel INDECENT PROPOSAL that was translated into more than 22 languages and turned into a Paramount motion picture starring Robert Redford and Demi Moore. He can be reached at his website www.jackengelhard.com.

If Barack Obama had read my Amazon Shorts series of articles and stories on coal mining, he not be so proud of what he and Biden have been saying about that industry.
So many people, even in high places, have no realistic concepts of what, at baseline, causes a light switch to work when it's turned "on." Many people don't have a clue about what makes a civilized world keep churning and turning. That type of knowledge is usually held by people in heavy industry, those who have been publically reviled by Obama and Biden as being worse than terrorists.
That type of lack of knowledge is terrifying (or maybe it isn't a lack of knowledge, which is even more terrifying), as well as heartbreaking and discouraging for those who labor in mines and other industries, working people, many of whom see too clearly that the pseudo-science of terrorist environmental concepts and tactics are politically based and dangerously inaccurate from any perspective of true science, which has not been allowed clear airing in the media.
A foundation of information on all this can be gained easily through in my mining stories. But they have remained underground and basically unread... so far. As soon as I'm able, I'm hoping to collect them to place on Kindle, then work harder at promoting them, hoping it's not too late.
I think the next administration (by default of not having the right information) might cause USA citizens to begin seeing on which side bread is buttered, and from where and how light emanates in its presently most efficient form of delivery. None of this lifeblood flows from sweated effort through liberal veins.
Another book I wish everyone would read is THE CASE AGAINST BARACK OBAMA. There are some great reviews on that book which nutshell it very well. It's available on Amazon in hardcopy, as well as on Kindle.
Yes, Jack, I REALLY wish people would read, for openers, your BATHSHEBA DEADLINE, and John's ODYSSEY: 1970. After reading those, they would move on to all the books you and John have written.
The Truth is Out There, if people will just look in the right places and under the right angles of light.
At the moment, I'm headed to proudly cook supper for my husband, who will soon be home from the mine, where he works as a mechanic, high-voltage electrician.
He know's where his bread is buttered, and I know who makes light switches work, across the USA.
Uh.... I think the Chinese commies would call this a "cult of personality". of course with suitable hypocrisy such cults were okay for Mousey Dung and Chou En Lai....but outrageous for the Gang of Four [whoever THEY were].
The first paragraph of the Manifesto is a real grabber. Karl shoulda' stopped there.
During my visit to this page, my browser was providing a couple large picture ads for PC games; an ad for brain enhancement; and a few, no graphiccs, one-line-hyperlink ads for writing help(!!) and for free cards from HP to celebrate Obama's victory.
Ironically, the same day I was in B&N previewing (read quite a lot of it that day, then bought it on my Kindle) THE CASE AGAINST BARACK OBAMA, I had also picked up a fascinating book about the guys who started Google. The Google book provided some interesting info about how ads in browsers can be targeted to the page's subject matter as well as targeted to the browser person, based on his browsing history, searches, etc. Actually I don't mind that type of targeting, because I sometimes notice ads for items I had been looking for and wanted to know more about.
On the other hand, thankfully, it's easy for me to ignore ads when I'm focused on what I'm attempting to do with my online work, especially with my browser set to block pop up ads DEMANDING that something be clicked to get the ad off the screen (they're usually placed in front of what you're reading or doing).
Of course the political manipulation ads or the ones pushed by lots of $$$ backing are probably shown across the board to everyone, no matter what established browsing habits and tastes are being shown. On reputable web pages, at least those are still on the outer edges and in the background, not disrupting what the surfer is chosing to do.
I'll close by noting that what I like about Jack and your novels and op-eds is that both of you purposely back your written expressions and stands by actual facts which aren't politically skewed, even though it's refreshingly clear where both of you stand on any issue you're featuring.
Thanks again to both of you for rigorously working your lives and minds toward a solid foundation in truth and the reality of cause and effect, and mostly for having published your books, the collection of which, if read carefully, could probably cure a gross variety of cultural ills brought on by (purposely) misled human thought.
I'm glad Jack posted this particular essay, because THE BATHSHEBA DEADLINE is a perfect place to begin that type of mental realignment and soul reconnection.
