It has come time to use one of those nifty boards with pictures and velcro to help my 4 year old communicate with us. Although he can communicate quite a few things, he still cannot communicate to us hurt, or emotions properly and there are a few other things that he still has tremendous difficulty saying.. and us understanding...
My question for you all is this.. does anyone know of a site .. even if its online.. where I could get the start up for this concept. We can get all the pics we need and have them laminated, but to have the board where he can velcro them to ... I guess i could make myself one, but i want one that will stand up to quite a bit of use and can be easily put in my purse or in a small bag for him when he goes to his dad's house or when we are out and about..
Just getting ideas as we are just starting this...

My daughter was severly speech delayed....she learned to be indepedant very quickly, since she couldn't communicate with us very well. We ended up putting a lock on the frig. because if she was thristy, she'd just try to get a cup of milk herself.
The foam core boards she got at Target or Wal-Mart. They've withstood about 2 years of being moved around. If you want larger than poster size, I'm sure you could google Foam Core posters and find some huge sizes.
While you're in Wal-mart, look in either the sewing or craft section, they will have velcro that has adhesive on the back of it(as opposed to the kind you have to sew on). It will come both in pre-packages rolls or you can look where the ribbon by the yard is. They usually have it there too(buying it buy the yard is much cheaper).
For the traveling portion, they made a book(8.5x11) that just had plain laminated sheets of paper bound together. One each page there were velcro tabs to correspond to the velcro letters, words, or pictures they had.
If that makes no sense, feel free to message me and i'll try to explain in more detail. Good luck!
We also did a LOT of sign language - that was a terrific help.
I never thought about cutting stuff from boxes.. great idea... i need to get a laminator in the house too.. that would be great.. guess i better start putting my christmas list together...lol
