I had to go to the mall this morning to pick up a babyshower present. I was able to talk my husband in to dropping of us, and I estimated the walk home to be six miles, which I figured I could easily do.
I have been so tired this past week, and I have felt as if I was fighting off a cold, so the exercise had been limited. I figured I would get some miles in this way, since I felt energetic this morning.
Well, I have to admit that I overestimated my energy a bit, because half way through I was very very tired. Sky enjoyed the walk (sitting in his very comfy stroller), and he thought it was great to see so many new things, as this was the first time we walked from the mall.
We stopped by subway to pick up a 5 dollar sandwich to share, but when we got home Sky was sleeping and I was too exhausted to eat, I just wanted to drink. I just googled the walk, and it turned out that I walked 7.5 miles (12 km). It was warm but not too hot (mid 80s), but we had to take many water breaks along the way.
I am so happy I did walk home, as I now know it can be done, but I have the feeling I will sleeping well tonight. Being able to walk all over the place really gives me such a great sense of independence (since my husband uses our car for work), and it is very important to me to feel that I have control over where I want to go instead of having to be dependent on everyone else to give me rides. This is the longest distance I have walked in one stretch ever, although I used to run longer distances....but that was back when I was young and fit.
What is your favorite way of exercising?
What is the longest distance you have ever walked?
Mine is playing basketball or soccer, but since I am now a Mom walking, riding my bike, doing pilates and yoga will have to do unless I am able to sneak in some practise with my sons.

And pushing a stroller and after shopping.
Lots to see make a walk go faster, so is a chatting companion.
I love to walk - mostly in the city - and often walk three miles.
I used to play basketball.
I need to return to the gym to lift more weights.
There is the International Mall in Tampa which is a really fun place to visit - great restaurants, nice in and outdoor courtyards and restaurants and plenty of place to sit, the stores are killer and fun too. Sometimes I like to see how the other half lives:)
Now that it's winter here (ok so technically it's not, but tell that to the subzero weather we've been having;) ) I just use my wii for exercise most of the time. We found a Wii fit on Sunday, and I've been using it for an hour plus everyday, in addition to the Wii sports games that I like. :)
I need to exercise more.
Walking is sort of a forced exercise for me. We have two cars but I can't drive. (Long story) I don't mind doing it, but there are some places that I just can't get to on my own and only so many groceries that I can lug at one time. I hate taking the bus and the service isn't so great from our house anyway.
I do like hiking on occasion, as well, but I don't have the stamina for running. (I'm fairly certain I have a touch of exercise-induced asthma.)
I enjoyed reading your walking saga. It did remind me of the days when I regularly ran 18 to 20 miles a week. It was wonderful taking in the early morning river bank sites of the Monongahela, Ohio and Allegheny rivers. Each season offered up new sites. Now feeling very much in shape I accepted a challenge to do a 12 mile charity walk through the streets of Pittsburgh, fully confident that it would be a "cake walk" for a seasoned runner.
Well talk about over estimating both energy and conditioning levels, the last mile hurt so bad I had to reach down and pull my legs up to negotiate a 6 inch curb, it was a funny picture with two of us walking gingerly (as though steping on hot coals." No one warned me calves, thighs and buttocks receive different conditioning from walking that you achieve from running. It took days to get rid of the soreness.
