Afghan Army Growing at Record Pace

The training of the Afghan Army is critical to long-term stability in a country torn by decades of war. But I'm concerned that we are placing too much emphasis on numbers and not enough on the technical and tactical competency that will allow the Afghan Army to operate independently. Self-sufficient Afghan Army units will be needed in greater numbers as NATO continues to lose its will in Afghanistan, and the United States will not be able to shoulder the burden alone.

As the article notes, Afghanistan is a warrior nation and they have the will to fight. But your misgivings are warranted, given the tactical abilities of insurgents. It seems as if things will get worse (possibly much worse) before they get better. By the way, Greg, you might be interested in an interview that Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, granted to the BBC just today. I posted an article (and a link to audio) regarding the interview here.

As with any imperial power we will never give the Afghans the training or the weapon sufficent to eject us. Therefore they will never have the true abilities to defeat the insurgents. As it is they have no natural loyalty to their colonial masters and as soon as we begin to withdraw they will turn on us enmasse.
