I just finished reading Blood is the New Black, by Valerie Stivers, and what a hoot it was!
I don't read a lot of ordinary romance books. I like paranormal romance. And this (wait for it) was a book I could really sink my teeth into.
Think of The Devil Wears Prada, with fangs.
Kate McGraw is a very nice girl with some drama in her past. Her mom, a famous fashion designer, left home when she was young and never came back. So Kate determined to do something practical with her life and went to work as an EMT, planning to go to medical school.
But the summer before she's supposed to start school, the opportunity to go to New York and work at a fashion magazine called Tasty comes her way, and all her repressed love for fashion and curiosity about that world make the temptation too hard to resist.
So Kate finds herself working as a lowly intern in the midst of beautiful, young, emaciated models and magazine staff who are always dressed to kill. Soon, she's working all day and partying at night, and beginning a romance with a hot photographer.
But something isn't right. Young women in the industry are being murdered, and a gossip blog called StakeOut is making outrageous claims that someone on Tasty's staff is the murderer, and not only that, but that Tasty is actually a nest of real Vampires!
But what if it's not as rediculous as it seems?
This story is a delicious blend of an insider's look at the fashion magazine world that rings absolutely true and a slightly scary but very funny vampire tale.
Valerie Stivers was an intern at Mirabella and worked for CondeNast, and she knows her bloodsuckers when she writes about them.
Blood is the New Black is original, clever, and a tremendous lot of fun.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars!
