Have you ever asked yourself why our society loves Superheroes so much? Our culture spends millions and millions of dollars on movies, comics, toys and other items for characters like Batman, Spiderman, Superman, and on and on. NBC’s Heroes is a smash TV hit because it shows how normal people can have super power. We are addicted. I recently watched Hancock at the cheapies, and there was a cool line in there where Charlize Theron says that they are called Superheroes in today’s culture, but they’ve been called others like “gods” in Roman and Greek mythology. Where is the root?
Well, I have theory. I think the entire idea of superheroes is plagiarism of the one true superhero - Jesus Christ - the original. I read 1 Cor. 15 this week, and was floored at the idea of a Superman like figure conquering our sin and the grave. I mean, seriously, the guy beat death, and he’s coming back again to kill all his enemies and finally destroy death. Sound like anything familiar??? Yeah, you’ve heard this story a thousand times told in different ways because it’s based off the real story.
Jesus not only beats death, but allows us to share in his power. Through faith in him, we are able to conquer the grave as well. Hell Yeah! It’s such a natural part of who we are as humans to want to fight death, to want to live, to be a part of something bigger. That’s why kids love playing with toys from different worlds. They will play with their heroes, like these Speed Racer toys and Bakugan action figures. Girls will even worship girls like Hannah Montana and play with these because they want to be part of something bigger than themselves.
This is the way we are made. Have you ever thought of it like that? Jesus is everywhere and in everything. All you need to do is have eyes to look.
