From what I understand, there are no points involved in the rating system; for you by rating or for the poster by receiving. The person who posted does get points for you viewing whatever it is that they published simply by you clicking onto their page. You get no points for doing so, however.
Gather's point system changes all the time. Some times I get more points for commenting then posting and other times it is the other way around. I don't think anyone knows for sure.
I believe it goes by you just stopping in and viewing the items, rating and comments are just lagniappe (meaning extra). I wondered the same thing for my very own so I just had to prove my point. I have taken days where all I do is to race through my friends photos, leaving no comments and the pts just keep showing up.
I don't really know, but if I stop by and comment on something I ALWAYS leave a rating too.
It seems points have been slow the last couple of days though, for me atleast. I have been quite busy on here both monday and tuesday, and yesterday only went up $1 and the same on Monday.
I usually always go up atleast 2 when I spend that much time on here.
The more you comment rate and look at others work, the more points you give to them. It helps you to spread around the good because then they will visit you and do the same.

Ratings can only help you if you receive enough 10's to qualify for the "Highest Rated" listings. Then, you may garner a few extra readers. However, a single rating less than a 10 will immediately remove you from these lists.
In some cases, ratings can actually harm your readership and credibility. Therefore, I recommend turning off ratings for everything you publish.

commenting and rating are just a nice way to let your freinds know that "you" have been there..........
