After the initial euphoria of Obama's election night win, for the next 24 hours I naively thought the world had actually changed. To be fair, yes, for those of us who believe in democracy, equality, open government, the separation of church and state, education, human rights...it was indeed a victory. But now the sickening underbelly of the human race, the residue of all our hatreds, the scum that had been hiding just under the surface of our consciousness has begun to bubble up. We must not let it deter us.
The first major public acknowledgment that these forces could be a real danger to Obama came in the last days of the campaign when Steve Edwards the son of Imperial Wizard (this is not Harry Potter folks) Ron Edwards of the Imperial Klans of America, was involved with two white supremacists who were charged in a bizarre plot to behead blacks across the country and assassinate Barack Obama while wearing white top hats and tuxedos. These are clearly either totally drugged out, brain damaged, people, or perhaps it's just the result of that good old fashioned southern inbreeding.
Living here in Cambridge, Massachusetts, one easily forgets that places like Dawson Springs and Central City Kentucky, home of the nations second largest (after the Brotherhood (glad it's not the "sisterhood") of Klans, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan inMarion Ohio) Ku Klux Klan group, still exist. Not only do they exist, but the Kentucky group has a 28 acre compound surrounded by gates and armed guards in militarycamouflage gear, including an open field for burning crosses. (Now there's a fun way to spend a family weekend, attend a cross burning in Kentucky.)
But thanks to the work of the Southern Poverty Law Center, these sickos may soon be forced into bankruptcy. They are bringing a civil rights lawsuit against Ron Edwards accusing his group of inciting it's members to severely beat a Latino teen who was attending a country fair. The legal costs fighting the suit, may (hopefully) put them out of business, or at least curtail their operations.
But there is a spate of such racist events now surfacing. An Oklahoma woman was killed in Louisiana because she tried to leave a Ku Klux Klan initiation ritual. The killers were arrested inCovington LA. In Springfield Massachusetts, the Macedonia Church of God, a predominantly Black church, was burned to the ground last Wednesday. It's been declared arson. The police are investigating. The 71 year old Bishop of the church was a former school principal and police commissioner, said hisparishioners "were deeply disappointed, surprised, disheartened and stunned." He knew of no threats against the church and hoped "that it's just arson..." and not someone expressing their hatred of the first black president.
I know the majority of Europeans are enthusiastic about Obama. I recall the hundreds of thousands of people who thronged to see him in Berlin. But we can not forget that Germany and Austria are the heartland as well as the homeland of the Nazis. So I was not terribly surprised to read the following hate filled statements European right wing nuts.
These include a leading Austrian television journalist, Klaus Emmerich, who a day after the election, said on camera that he "wouldn't want the Western world to be directed by a black man." Emmerich, who works for the country's leading public television station, had previously work in Washington DC as a foreign correspondent. Emmerich told viewers:
"I think the Americans are still racists and they must be very badly off to so spectacularly -- and that has to be said, no doubt -- send a black man with a black, very good-looking and clever woman to the White House."
When he was later asked to apologize, Emmerich told an Austrian newspaper that "blacks are not as politically civilized."
Separately a right-wing member of Poland's Parliament called the election result "the end of the white man's civilization." He added: "America will soon pay a high price for this quirk of democracy."
"Quirk of democracy" my as*... These sorry excuses for human beings are still among us. But they are being exposed. The clear light of day, and all the millions of people who like me, voted forBarack Obama, will not let the forces of hatred and stupidity rule the world again.

Such bigotry is a mark of a sick mind.
I honestly don't know what to say to this. There is the kneejerk response: "of course" it is wrong to be or feel or act this way. Let's look at the underbelly of these folks. What causes someone to hate like this? If we can get to the root cause(s) and fix the underlying causes, can we come up with a cure?
If not, can we ship the hate mongers in our country off to Alaska?
Just thinking out loud...
Wilka
We will not repeat this huge mistake.
Rather keep them walled off in small groups among us. Isolate them, and wipe them out, like little cancer tumors instead of one big giant tumor that kills us all...
Actually, Bob, that's not correct. A lot of Aryan Nation and related neo-Nazi groups are heavy into meth manufacturing and dealing, and it wouldn't surprise me if some of the Klan groups were starting to get into it, either. These people can't get funding for their groups via the traditional methods, so they have to get money somehow. The meth network seems to be the answer.
If you cannot understand why someone does not understand racism, you have no place voicing your opinion of their opinion.
Cynthia - I have fought this all my life - thanks for making folks aware of what is going on - many people just were never exposed to it. Racists are now in the minority and hopefully and with pressure many will die out slowly. Do they ever stop to think if they were in a wreck with their child and a black paramedic stopped to help...do they realize that their hatred rides in front of them like a freight train - do they ever think period>?. No. Salud
There are plenty of nuts to go around and they come in all C-O-L-O-R-S!!!!
I would have to differ with Carla on this. I DO INDEED HATE bush. I hate him for his stupidity, I hate him for his hypocrisy, I hate him for being a liar, I hate him for leading this country into 2 wars and finishing neither of them at a cost of thousands of American lives, hundreds of thousands of PSD and severely wounded veterans who will have to deal with this the rest of their lives, millions of innocent deaths in the middle east, I hate him for destroying the American economy with his stupid tax policies and DEREGULATION at all costs, I hate him for appointing unqualified people to the Supreme Court, I hate him for appointing unqualified people to every single government post... I could go on Linda, but you catch my drift. The fact that he is white and Republican is of no consequence.
The saddest part of this article is the woman who was killed as she was leaving a KKK initiation exercise. Perhaps, she was able to see what is wrong with the KKK. Perhaps, reason brought her to the conclusion that she could not be a member. It is a tragic episode in the history of our nation. I feel very bad for people who don't know any better than to live with prejudice. It must be rejected at every turn.
I have had run ins growing up having to fend these men off myself as a teen and it was not fun at all.. It in itself has made me somewhat racist against another race, not because of waht that race has done, but because I did not want to be associated with them and be killed myself.
My only fear is that althought it has been around forever, it will only be out in the open more ... and more lives might be lost due to what is happeneing.
There were a number of good Black people that could have run, but we got a Communist instead.
A lot of people who didn't know any better were made spiritually ill by the fear-hate-torture-greed-hypocrisy etc of this past 8 years.
Those of us who do healing work, those of us who pray for healings, etc - who pray for the USA - time to get to work to call for internal rebalancing, so that what we see manifesting outside ourselves, all around us, will be in better balance.
Remember that whatever shows up on the outside, has to have been created on the inside first.
The KuKluxKlan is part of all of our consciousness - a sewer-hell that we must now clean out. Call in the spiritual roto-rooter! Let's get to work, each one of us, rooting out the Klan part of our consciousness AND praying for the cleansing and rebalancing of the USA.
We can do this thing. Let's not just sit around complaining and pointing fingers at "them," when we should be scrubbing our own mental floorss.
Folks like this make me embarrassed for being human.
Do you actually think that the majority of Southerners inbreed? And do you think that inbreeding only takes place in the South?
"Living here in Cambridge, Massachusetts, one easily forgets that places like Dawson Springs and Central City Kentucky, home of the nations second largest (after the Brotherhood (glad it's not the "sisterhood") of Klans, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan inMarion Ohio) Ku Klux Klan group, still exist. Not only do they exist, but the Kentucky group has a 28 acre compound surrounded by gates and armed guards in militarycamouflage gear, including an open field for burning crosses. (Now there's a fun way to spend a family weekend, attend a cross burning in Kentucky.)"
So do you base your obvious warped opinion of Kentucky on the KKK in Dawson Springs? Do you think that racism is unique to the South as well as Kentucky?
Of course racism is indeed sick and immoral. In fact, we as a country should have been past these racial issues decades ago.
I was having lunch in one of the local restaurants a couple of days ago. They had their big screen TV playing and Obama was speaking at a campaign rally. Suddenly, a lady stood up right in front of God and everybody and shouted " I wish somebody would just shoot that son of a bitch!" Then a guy stood up and proudly stated " Oh don't you worry. We've got enough skinheads and KKK to take care of that bastard!"
Yes the above conversation took place right here in Kentucky where I was born and raised. This problem is not unique nor isolated to the South. One could hear such a conversation and experience such attitudes in Chicago, New York, Detroit, Green Bay or any city or state in the U.S. for that matter.
Your obvious attempt to paint Kentuckians as well as other Southerners with the brush of inbreeding and cross burning simply shows your own bigotry, which pretty much proves that you are just as much of a low life scum as the racists that you are criticizing.
Of course this is a free country and they came. People divided in two groups. One agreeing with the Klan and those that didn't. It was disgusting. We lived 5 blocks from where they held their outdoor rally. We could hear their speech clearly. Our kids and their friends stood (against our wishes) on the opposing side of the 'fence'. We didn't oppose them going or standing there, we were afraid for them being there period. They are very open minded and outspoken. The Klan had their say, tried recruiting people then left. But they certainly left a mark on our community. People we had considered our friends for years stood on the 'wrong' side of the fence. They agreed with the Klan. One of the city workers was threatened by who he had considered to be his friends because he was black.
The Klan and skinheads are everywhere. I am sure there have been and will be more and more threats by these radical racists the closer it gets to Jan. 20. But as sure as there will be threats I'm even more sure this country as a whole is smarter than that. We elected him. That says something for the majority of the people.
You seem to be pointing to the evidence that proves my point. In any case, the scene you witnessed in your home state of Kentucky happens WAY more frequently in RED states. As a matter of fact there ARE WAY more racists in RED states, poorer health care in RED states, more obesity in RED states, more STD's and HIV in RED states, more drug abuse in RED states, more domestic violence in RED states, higher murder rate in RED states, higher divorce rate in RED states...
you can see it all by the numbers in the State of Nation Spread Sheet HERE:
http://sotns.blogspot.com/
So Timothy, is it due to "inbreeding?"...probably not, just the left overs from our Neanderthal past.
I say free speech is an important right in America that needs to be protected. The fact that any deranged asshole can buy a gun, is not a "right" that needs to be protected.
If anything "The Nation" is a threat to Obama.
Who could have been more of a threat (and no one could have done more damage) than Dick Cheney, g.w. bush, Condie, Wolfie, Richard Perle, Tom DeLay, "Brownie - of "you're doin' a heck of a job - Katrina THAT Brownie", and ALL their cronies that were the corporate CEOS that they put in power that has brought this country to it's knees.
The majority of folks that are "racist" against a race other than their own do not even know why.
Stupidity and racism go hand in hand.
Oh really? I checked out your link, but I didn't see any such spreadsheet.
"But it does have the whiff of truth about it doesn't it??? That's why you felt you had to rush in and defend your fellow Kentuckians."
It sure does have the whiff of truth about it, but it isn't unique to Kentucky. Of course everything that you pointed out does actually happen in Kentucky, however those issues aren't unique to Kentucky nor any part of the South. Your references to Kentucky and the South in general show nothing short of bigotry and sweeping generalizations on your behalf.

I read the spread sheet, and there is no data there to back up Cynthia's claim.
Obama used the race card throughout the whole of the election. If anyone disagreed with his politics, it was always because of his race. The fact was people for the most parts, disagreed with his politics no matter what race he was. Many people just flat out disagreed with him being human, but that is just an opinion, not based on race, but his personality.

"I read the spread sheet, and there is no data there to back up Cynthia's claim."
Timothy, either you did not get the link, OR you don't know how to read a spread sheet. In every instance, red states have higher rates of murder, domestic violence, teen pregnancy, obesity, lower education standards, poorer health care systems and in general, a poorer overall quality of life, than blue states.
More empty rhetoric from you.
Give me some DIRECT QUOTES, show me one actual ad that was endorsed by Obama where he "used the race card".
You seem to be among that sick minority that just can't seem to accept that YOU lost, and Obama actually won 10 more states than bush did in 2004.
Twisting my words suggesting that I said something that I didn't say. But that's par for the course for you.
You, like g.w. bush, Sarah Palin, and the NEW John McCain, don't have a single, decent idea to offer the American people. So you resort to the same old sh*t. And that is the same sh*t that has brought our country to it'd knees, economically, morally and spiritually.
There were a number of good Black people that could have run, but we got a Communist instead. "
danny r
Surely that is the book read by danny r, mickey d, timothy; et. al.
It's the book that provides them with all their "factoids"...
I can read a spread sheet quite fine..thank you. However there is no data in that spread sheet to back up the statements in your article. Maybe you should actually read the data before you provide a link...just a helpful hint.
Though I'm sure that people do burn crosses in Kentucky, I've never witnessed such an event. The problem that I have with your article is the fact that you attempted to make it appear that anybody could drive down to the court square of Dawson Springs on any given Saturday night and witness a cross burning.
1. New Orleans
2. Camden, NJ
3. Detroit
4. St. Louis
5. Oakland

Now let's see...how many of those cities are in the south?
I sure was hoping that Cynthia would come back and debate this issue some more. There are positives and negatives in both the north and the south.
Right, FOX NEWS is your definitive source. That says it all.
