Sarah Palin's attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism provoked a spike in death threats against the future president, Secret Service agents revealed during the final weeks of the campaign.
The Republican vice presidential candidate attracted criticism for accusing Mr Obama of "palling around with terrorists", citing his association with the sixties radical William Ayers.
The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric.
But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further.
The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks.
The revelations, contained in a Newsweek history of the campaign, are likely to further damage Mrs Palin's credentials as a future presidential candidate. She is already a frontrunner, with Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, to take on Mr Obama in four years time.
Details of the spike in threats to Mr Obama come as a report last week by security and intelligence analysts Stratfor, warned that he is a high risk target for racist gunmen. It concluded: "Two plots to assassinate Obama were broken up during the campaign season, and several more remain under investigation. We would expect federal authorities to uncover many more plots to attack the president that have been hatched by white supremacist ideologues."
Irate John McCain aides, who blame Mrs Palin for losing the election, claim Mrs Palin took it upon herself to question Mr Obama's patriotism, before the line of attack had been cleared by Mr McCain.
That claim is part of a campaign of targeted leaks designed to torpedo her ambitions, with claims that she did not know that Africawas a continent rather than a country.
The advisers have branded her a "diva" and a "whack job" and claimed that she did not know which other countries are in the North American Free Trade Area, (Canada and Mexico). They say she spent more than $150,000 on designer clothes, including $40,000 on her husband Todd and that she refused to prepare for the disastrous series of interviews with CBS's Katie Couric.
In a bid to salvage her reputation Mrs Palin came out firing in an interview with CNN, dismissing the anonymous leakers in unpresidential language as "jerks" who had taken "questions or comments I made in debate prep out of context."
She said: "I consider it cowardly. It's not true. That's cruel, it's mean-spirited, it's immature, it's unprofessional and those guys are jerks if they came away taking things out of context and then tried to spread something on national news that's not fair and not right."
She was not asked about her incendiary rhetoric against Mr Obama. But she did deny the spending spree claims, saying the clothes in question had been returned to the Republican National Committee. "Those are the RNC's clothes, they're not my clothes. I asked for anything more than maybe a diet Dr Pepper once in a while. These are false allegations."
Speaking as she returned to her native Alaska, Mrs Palin claimed to be baffled by what she claims was sexism on the national stage. "Here in Alaska that double standard isn't applied because these guys know that Alaskan women are pretty tough, on a par with the men in terms of being outdoors, working hard," she said.
"They're commercial fishermen, they're pilots, they're working up on the North slopein the oil fields. You see equality in Alaska. I think that was a bit of as surprise on the national level."

Some are suggesting Palin as a leader for the future of the Republican party. This is scary. She proved that she has zero understanding of any national or international issue (or location) and is glib with the attack line. If this is something the Republican party is proud of than they will spend a long time "in the wilderness." Rather they should focus on intelligent, pragmatic leaders such as Romney (if he still cares) and Jindal. The far right wing doesn't know it yet, but they are the past. And if the Democrats are smart, they will leave the far left wing in the past as well.
Ms. Palin should take her own advice. Her quote describes exactly what she did on the campaign trail to Pres-Elect Obama. She is a woman of very small intellect and very big ambitions. I'm sure there are many in the far-right conservative fundamentalist faction of the Republican Party who admire someone like this - someone who believes in the same type of religion they do and who is mean and nasty enough to get ahead, despite her lack of intelligence and class.
What is wrong with you people, give it up- grow -up. Move-on,election over the man-wonder won.Sit back chill-out, the check will soon be in the mail.Mc Cain hangs with Sarah that's an outrage-Obama hangs with terrorist-Ayers,racist-Wright,and Obama is a great man. Maybe Ayers will dedicate his next book to Lee Harvey Oswald.
Chill, wait for all the goodies Barack has promised.

Whatever happened to the party that touted personal responsibility? I guess that doesn't apply when YOU cause hate and possible death to our own leaders, right?
The Republican Party has 4-8 years to try to get its act together. They didn't realize what kind of people they were sucking up to when they went after the fundie vote. The non-wacky Christians need to stand up and speak to these people too if they don't want their religion viewed as a dangerous, cult-like, irrational group.
Where the hell did you get the idea it was unintentional? The only path to the white house they had was his death, and she's just that unscrupulous and ambitious, lets face it. She talks like trailer trash, and she is.
It's a scary party, these days, with the only ones left, the extreme right, and the weak minded, as exhibited up the page here.
The Savior King is at the throne-chill baby, soon you will be getting what you asked for or deserve.
Her response in Alaska is the sort of response I would expect from a middle school girl, not a contender for national politics. Perhaps I'm just out of the loop, but real politicians that have to interact daily with leaders across the globe don't normally talk that way, do they?

He has stood for and fought for the United States of America, unlike others who have never wore the uniform of military service, He Rev. Wright has as much right as any American to voice his complaints or opinion regarding America and its policy.
Rush Lambaugh never serve this country in uniform neither has Sean Hannity, neither did V.P. Dick Cheney, the list is long of chicken-hawks arm-chair generals rabbit for the fight they have avoided during their life time.
Now there are those that may not like what Rev. Wright said, but I'll defend his right to speak, this is still America.
Now for Mr. Aryers won his right to freedom because of unjust attempt by the justice system in America to prosecute him, he won his right to freedom in open court, he has his right to free speech wether you agree with his point of view or not he is an American citizen, otherwise get over it. No one is asking you to agree with their points of view but that is just the way we live here on American soil and if you don't like it, pack your bags and leave.
By continuing to focus on things like this, you are inciting hate and fear.
That's the image I've had of her from day one. Rabid and dangerous.
She is so over. Republicans will not allow her anywhere near the ticket. Unless they want more "I can see Russia from my house - Bridge to nowhere - Lipsticks and Pitbulls"
I personally like Obama better and voted for him.
McCain sold out to the right and he paid for it by going down in flames. The only states he won are those that no Democrat even have a shot in, under the current conditions.
Actually, this is not true, except for the accident that killed Weatherman member Ted Gold, Ayers' close friend Terry Robbins, and Ayers' girlfriend, Diana Oughton.
I know logic is hard for you, but you do realize that all of these attacks on Palin are coming FROM REPUBLICANS, right? These stories are being leaked by her own party. Not the liberals. Not the Democrats. These are republicans doing this to her. Here you are rambling on again about Ayers and Wright, and its the REPUBLICANS that are attacking your precious Palin. We'd all sooner see her go back to Alaska and stay there. Its the Republicans engaging in the smear campaign on your Golden Girl, not the Democrats.
Have you heard? Obama won; cut it out already!
The Campaign is over
This pure-hearted Christian lady was employing exactly the same kind of rabble-rousing tactics used by Dr. Goebbells in Hitler's Germany--demonizing opponents, making them seem sub-human ("He's not like US!"--Palin), and inciting violent passions. She's not fit to lead a boy scout troop, let alone a country.
I'll further state that if anything,
IF ANYTHING at all EVER happens to a President-elect,
OR
a President Obama,
THE BLOOD SHALL BE ON THE HANDS OF BOTH JOHN MC CAIN AND SARAH PALIN.
You do not play games with this.
They shall answer, and they shall answer dearly to God Almighty.
THAT, they shall not escape.
Just as Abel's blood cried out from the ground against CAIN,
so shall it be against PALIN and MCCAIN.
and it shall go hard against them.
Hopefully, it shall never happen -- hopefully.
But, if it ever does, their day shall come. WHEN their day comes -- those two -- I want front row, center seats -- a clear view of the proceedings.
Iniquity, plain and simple.
or
she is one of the dumbest people in politics.
You decide.
No, it shan't be forgotten.
I gave you a ten, Fred. Thank you for posting this.
By continuing to focus on things like this, you are inciting hate and fear.
Cybergwen !
The most important part of any healthy relationship between two people is being able to talk and listen to one another. You and the other person can figure out what your common interests are. You can share your feelings with the other person and trust that they will be there to listen and support you. In healthy relationships, people don't lie. Communication is based on honesty and trust. By listening carefully and sharing your thoughts and feelings with another person, you show them that they are an important part of your life.
See, this is a major problem here. Linda, there is a big difference between 'accepting differences' and laying down and condoning abhorrent behavior. Palin's behavior was beyond negative campaigning, beyond decency. To point that out, and make connections between her actions and the plotted violence that resulted because of it [recognized by the authorities as such] is simply fact and should serve as a warning and a learning device to future politicians.
I'm really, really sick and tired of the 'blame game' and 'pointing the finger' BS that the Bush Administration has put out there - what it is is actually a way to avoid personal accountability for one's actions. If no one stands up and shows them for what they are, how are people going to be held accountable and learn from it?
I thought the Republican Party believed in personal accountability?
If Gov. Sarah Palin is the future of the Republican Party, they are doom to failure, no doubt about it!
What is everyone so afraid of?
Why the hate?
Is it so hard to swallow that a conservative viewpoint might be something to listen to? What about free speech?
Pretty soon she's going to be blamed for the bad economy, global warming, Tom Brady's knee injury, the fact that Pluto is no longer a planet, etc.
She certainly was under qualified for VP this time around. So should the media trash her and try to dig up any and all dirt to discredit her? Is that what America has become? Is the media the one who should decide if anyone can live the American dream? They certainly got behind Mr. Obama.
Why such hatred?
Think about it.
