I've spent some time thinking about the number of people who start an exercise program to lose belly fat and either end up losing no weight or gaining on it. Exercises like interval training are great for losing weight but the devil of weight loss is really in the details. There are three things that i found important when trying to lose fat.
Being overweight is really no fun at all. I was overweight a few years ago, i thought i would be easy to recover from but it was actually really difficult. I felt like i was stuck and couldn't move. Friends used to tell me,"don't worry, you are fine as you are...", but it didn't really help.
The catalyst that started my weight loss, and confirmed to me in my mind that I needed help was an incidence that happened in the bar one night. A few of my friends and I met after work. The only place to sit was on some white plastic stools. One of my friends jokingly said that it wouldn't be able to hold me. I laughed with them, but it really hurt deep inside. My first thoughts were what do people really think of me, and what type of first impressing am I making on people I meet for the first time.
I was lean and I liked it. I enjoyed the compliments, clothes look great on me, I love catching those secret glances that come my way and its fantastic being an example for other people. Being lean is great, it's what you really want. So do you really want to stay fat? I don't want to stay fat!!! Really?, well here's the thing, getting thin is no secret. The perfect workout to lose belly fat, the right food – these things are not mysteries anymore, the tools for losing weight very quickly are right at your fingertips…so what's the problem?
I know exactly what it is. its mentally hard to start and stick to a lose belly fat exercise plan…"my diet starts on Monday…I'll go the gym tomorrow to make up for missing today…." Excuses I have used many, many times…until I really up my mind.
I think the challenge of losing stomach fat changes you more on the inside than the outside and I think it's those changes that shine through. Try something, imagine a week from today being a kilogram lighter, imagine that was real right now – it seems easier to do now. Right? Losing weight is a mental game.
In the next post I want to go through looking at your nutrition, and there may be a few surprises for you there.
