JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) -- Miriam Makeba, the South African singer who wooed the world with her sultry voice but was banned from her own country for more than 30 years under apartheid, died after collapsing on stage in Italy. She was 76.
I first knew of Ms. Makeba because of her big hit in the States called Pata, pata (Sp?). It was around the late sixties, I believe. Hers was a great talent.
What a shock I've seen her performing in Tel Aviv in the 70s, I don't remember the exact year; on our greatest stage, 'The palace of culture' - she was great. At least she achieved the dream of every artist and performer to die on stage. That's what most of them say, but just she did it. A terrible loss!
Sad, but she did live a long and full if not always happy life. Thank you so much for including that wonderful video. That's a great way to pay tribute to her.
