Beloved local news anchor, Heather Pick, passed away Friday due to complications from breast cancer.
I had to cry.
She was but thirty-eight years old.
Heather was one year younger than my sister was, when she died from complications due to breast cancer in 1995.
Today's news made me cry.
Heather Pick was one of my favorite morning news broadcasters. She shared the show with another established local morning anchor; Chuck Strickler. For quite a number of years this local morning news show was my favorite way to start my day. Once upon a time there were a team of anchors with Chuck and Heather at the top, one Chuck Gurney covering weather and one Lisa Kick providing traffic and cultural commentary. We casually referred to them with broad smiles as "Chuck-Chuck, Pick and Kick." They were a team that started our day with not just news, but also with the hearty chuckles of comedic comraderie.
Heather was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago. We, the viewing audience, were allowed a window to the changes this brought, as Heather shared the knowledge and the travails with us every morning. She held a stiff upper lip and a natural light heartedness throughout. During the years of her battle, Heather was very active in promoting the Susan Komen Race For The Cure. She leaves behind a loving husband and two small children.
The announcemnet came to our ears this morning as we sipped our first cup of coffee. Chuck Strickler announcing:
"Our beloved co-anchor, Heather Pick, died Friday November 7, 2008 due to complications from breast cancer. She will be sorely missed."
The news made me think of how much I would miss her; and it made me think of how much I have missed my sister these past many years.
I had to cry.

I lost my grandmother(my father's mother) Betty to lung cancer,
and also my grandfather James(my mother's stepfather) to emphsema/lungcancer,
and my cousin, Melissa, to cancer. I don't know what kind she had.
It reeks havoc where ever it goes. And, I go to a site every day, clicking on a banner that donates money each day to a Breast cancer foundation.
I hope my contribution, truly helps someone who needs it one day.
Wonderful tribute Bill.
