Gedenk is a new group formed in New York in 2006.
Motto: Never Forget
They are trying to reach out to young people amd teach them about the holocaust.
The year was 1939. Hitler was in power in Germany. He has a gigantic army. Newsreels @ the movies showed them marching as stick men. Not bending their legs or arms. They invade Poland. Poland was not prepared for war. They surrender in 30 days.
The newspapers in USA, showed pictures of Jewish families pulled out of their homes by the Nazis. They were then shot in the street. They also took young Polish girls to satisfy their troops. Most people in the USA did not want to believe that this was actually happening. In fact, since the newsreels were so descriptive, a lot of us children were no longer permitted to go to the movies.
Many small countries declared that they were neutral.
The Nazis built concentration camps and anyone suspected of being a Jew was packed on a train and sent to the camps. They filled these camps in no time.
So the weak, and ones of no use to them were gassed. Then their bodies were incinerated. The ashes were used to build roads.
In the USA, we saw pictures, but did not want to believe the horror.
I checked the Gedenk has a website.
