I wonder.....

I wonder how the vote would've gone if we were not allowed to know the gender or color of the people running for president. What if ONLY the ISSUES were what we were allowed to vote on?? I realize it couldn't be like this but  therotically : WHAT IF??  Did women vote for McCain because of Palin being a woman? Did blacks vote for Obama because he's black?  How did the gender and race 'sway' the votes? Unfortunatly, I think there are some voters who voted solely on this, regardless of the issues. No matter who won, or who I voted for, I wonder how it would've turned out if only "issues" were allowed to be voted upon......

I agree. The media is making a big deal about Obama because he is black. Shouldn't they be making a big deal of who he is, not what he is?

Interesting. I know my vote would have been the same. I just hope that we can all act like Americans, not partisans or races...that's what it will take to get us back on track...that and a lot of years.

i've wondered the exact same thing. say, we never saw obama or mccain but only heard their speeches and about their backgrounds . . . would people think differently. i know my vote wouldn't have been swayed, but some people's might have.

I agree. The issues where what decided my vote and I hope many others voted that way. The important thing is strong leadership to guide our country through this rough time, not whether a person is black, white, male or female. Good post.

I have to agree. I would have voted the same... but it would be interesting ... it will still be interesting how things play out these next few weeks as there is still a KKK here in the United states among other hate groups.. and racism is very rampant more than people really realize it is.

Im really not sure how it llwould have turned out, I think Obama got more votes because of his skin color, and I know many cried racism if you didnt like him even if it wasn't of his skin color and his race
truthfully I think it would have leaked to the press ifwe didn't know

They did that at my daughter's school but in the 7th grade....it was interesting...you circled what you believed in for each of several categories.......at the end, the teacher scored them according to a scale....my neighbor's daughter scored a +4 McCain.....another girl whose family is McCain supporters scored a +1 Obama....

I would've voted the same. I'm a reader of position papers, and that's what convinced me to vote for Obama. Seeing and hearing both candidates just convinced me it was the right choice for me.
I know many Republican women who loathed Palin - I still wonder who they ended up voting for?

At fivethirtyeight or fiveeightythree website, the election demographics are thoroughly covered.
As a Louisiana resident, I knew Obama would not do very well in this state and the color of his skin was an issue with many voters as it was in Miss, Ala., Geo, Tenn., etc. etc. Oddly enough, in numerous Western states, with smaller minority populations, Obama did very well. There is food for thought. In 2000, I strongly supported McCain, but he seemed like a different person in this election. I had zero problems with Palin being female, but didn't trust her to separate church and state.

Wouldn't matter to be because that IS why I voted. The issues were all that was really important to me and was how I decided on who I wanted.

I agree I do believe that so many voted for Obama just because he is black and not about the issues. I myself am from Louisiana and wanted McCain to win.

One of the few things I remember from my High School Civics class is that Americans do NOT use their heads when they vote. I don't think things will change too much until we start using our heads when we vote.

and thats the way it sould be...focas on issues. but Im sure some blacks siad to themselves, 'i'm gonna support Obama because we need to stick togehther".
And Im sure some women said," Im voting for McCain in support of us women sticking together.".
It doesnt make it right, but i'm sure some of the votes went that way.

I think that's a very interesting question... What if no one were allowed to see the candidates or know their genders... just the issues.
