I was reminded of this incident while reading the article My son the drug pusher! by Sheryl L.
I almost got into huge trouble with an officer over a license plate bulb. It was late at night, and dark. I was traveling with my 7 year old son asleep in the back seat. We were heading south on I-75 from Northwest Ohio to Southwest Ohio, a stretch of highway which is known for having some problems. I'd encountered enough to be leery of odd behavior from other drivers.
Another vehicle with very bright headlights approached my tail on the left and began to pass me, then slowed down and hung back. The vehicle then began speeding up and slowing down, and swerved into my lane a couple of times. Thinking it was a drunk driver or someone irrational/angry who might do something nuts, I looked around for an exit. The area where I was looked like an area close to a familiar exit, so I floored my gas pedal and passed the truck in front of me. As I sped up, so did the car in the left lane, but I got out and around, only to find that there was no exit. I was farther south than I had thought I was, and had all ready passed it.
Panicked, I kept it floored, getting my old hunk of junk up to about 80mph (hard for me to do in that thing) with the nutcase right on my tail... until the car behind me began flashing red & blue lights.
I have never been so relieved to get pulled over in all of my life! I can only imagine how bad the situation might have turned had I been right, and the other driver a drunk or an irrational nutcase.
By the time the rookie (and he was... he looked like a high school kid in a police costume!) got up to my window, though, I was mad, and before I realized what I was doing, I LECTURED THE POLICE OFFICER on how dangerous it was to frighten moms on the road in the dark like that. As soon as I realized I was telling off a cop, I stopped. In the end, though, I think that worked to my advantage. When he looked at his actions from my perspective, he conceded that I was justified in running away from him, though he said it was an unwise choice. Then he told me that his odd driving was due to his inability to read my license plate without the light that was supposed to be there, and told me to get it fixed. I went home without a citation... just a near heart attack, LOL... and replaced the bulb the next day.
