As someone who loves to play poker (a game where skill dominates), I really never wasted my time on slot machines. It's no secret that you have to be extremely lucky to come out ahead on slots. Penny slots really blew my mind at first. They have all these reels and paylines that make them appear complicated. So, for the longest time I decided to stay away from them. Until now!
So I did some research to try to figure out how penny slot machines work and if there is any certain strategy to follow in order to win more. I found the site Penny Slots Directory which has some decent info about slots. More specifically, I read their articles on how to play penny slots and how to win at penny slots. This gave me the confidence I needed to sign up and try slots online for money.
I started off doing well, taking $100 deposit and getting it up as high as $513. After that, variance starting kicking in and now I'm at around $89. The cool thing is, you can play for hours off a relatively small amount of money. I bet $0.01 per line and play all 20 paylines. That's just $0.20 per spin!
All-in-all once you get used to playing penny slots, they are a fun way to gamble with very little investment. For me, they provide a nice (mindless) alternatative to playing poker, which takes a lot of mental concentration.
What are your thoughts on playing penny slots?

Last time I was there my wife hit a $62.50 jackpot after putting $5 in the machine.
We have never lost more than $30 in a night, and that is about what a movie and popcorn and soda costs.
I always wanted to play live poker but feel a little intimidated by more experienced players. Online, the computer gently reminds you what you should be doing and there is nobody staring at you. Except maybe virtually.

I love video poker as well! I've hit a couple of royal flushes in the past few years. The first one was after I got knocked out of a poker tournament. I had $10 in free play and decided to use it on a $0.25 Jacks or Better machine. I hit the royal for $1,200. I ran back over to the poker tournament and told them that I appreciate getting knocked out. lol

I've noticed the same with live casinos. The table games keep getting more expensive, the pay table on video poker keeps getting worse, and the slots keep getting tighter. I'm getting where I enjoy playing online more and more. You can play blackjack for as little as $1, $0.01 slots, and poker stakes as low as .01/.02. You save gas too. Plus, I love being able to play in my PJs. :)
You should really give live poker a shot. I was ultra-nervous my first time too. The adrenaline is incredible when you get in a big hand.
I'd play Fixed Limit Hold'em to start. Once you learn the game well, No Limit is where the real money is.
I usually take no more than 100 to $200 and I play the slots because they feel safe to me.
Thanks so much for the links - I'll be checking those out when I get a chance.
