This year for Christmas, we decided that it was time for Elliott to learn about giving to other people, instead of just receiving. He will be three in February, so I used simple terms to explain to him how we sometimes buy presents for our friends, and even people we don't know. He knows that we donate to other people throughout the year, and that we make care packages for Daddy's friends that are far away from home, but I don't think he's ever really got it until now. I explained that some kids don't have as many toys as he does, and while their parents try to buy them things, they just can't. I told him sometimes even the parents need a little help to get things they need. He seemed a little unsure of what I meant at first, and he asked a few questions. He asked many more questions than I thought he would.
We're planning on being more involved in the Christmas wishlists this year, and I want to let Elliott help me pick out presents for them when we are out shopping. I've had him look at pictures of the different people we are buying things for, and I've been explaining why we are friends with them, even though we've never met (for example, we are friends with her because she tells funny stories, is nice, likes to share pretty pictures, etc).
Well today, he wanted a sticker out of his sticker box. He brought it over to me, and asked for one. Then he went through them some more and picked out a few others. I asked him what he was doing, and he said he was picking the stickers for his friends, so he could give them as Christmas presents. He picked out ones for his little friends here locally, and even some of the kids he likes to look at pictures of on here, along with the ones that he looked at today, as his new friends :) He even picked out a sticker for Susan's dog, Kricket! He said she could wear it on her shirt.
I am so proud of him for being willing to give away his own things. I never even mentioned giving anything of his own, he came up with it all on his own.
