Another Year ~ Heather

Heather is my (step) sister.  If you have read any of my other articles in this series, you know how much I detest using the "step" term.  My dad and Dee married when we were young, therefore we (children) basically grew up together.

Heather is younger than I am and she always wanted to go places with me when we were growing up.  I enjoyed her company and we spent a lot of time together.  After a short while, a bond grew between us.

As time ticked on, circumstances and "life" put a distance between us.  She now how things that keep her busy (work, a child and husband, etc) and I have things that keep me busy.  We see each other mostly at family functions.  I like to think the bond remains, despite the distance and other things.

Heather's birthday was October 18th.  Yes, I know I'm posting this late, but here it is nonetheless.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HEATHER.  I LOVE YOU!

 PS...Heather, for Christmas I want some pictures of you, Matt, & Aspen :)

Sister and brother bonds are grown not born, as you well know and as I well know, having 2 half sisters and 2 half brothers...I too detest thinking or referring to them in any other terms then brothers and sisters

Nice article. I also hate saying Step-sister or Half-sister, as well as Step-mom and try to avoid it. I used to tell my kids at holidays etc. when visiting that this was my other Mom, and I was lucky enough to have two moms when growing up.
I'm glad my biological Mom that I actually lived with, wanted us kids to be close to my Dad's other family. She never bad mouthed or anything about them at all... just my Dad, LOL.

I married more than once so my children had half brothers & sisters and some steps too. I never allowed that reference. They were all my children therefore they were all brothers & sisters. They still stand by that and are close.

The word "step" should remain as a compound word in stepladder. I, too, do not like the term step-brother or step-sister.

Katherine, I could not agree with you more about bonds being grown. Very well said.

John, your mother was very smart indeed. I do not think there should be conflict between "exs", especially when children are involved. We have been fortunate enough that our parents get along and will even sit down together at gatherings without "showing out". I always tell people I have four parents, because it is true and I love each of them dearly.

Nancy, it is good your family is that way. If everyone was, it would be a much better place :) You taught them well.

At 59, I got a stepfather and two stepsisters. I LOVE saying stepfather. It's something I never thought I'd have. Of course, it helps that my stepfather is a terrific man who makes my mother happy. My stepsisters have been great to her, too.
