Healthy Eating on a Budget: Learn How and Receive a $25 Target Gift Card! Live Chat Wednesday, Nov. 5th at 3pm ET!

November 04, 2008 05:25 PM EST (Updated: November 04, 2008 05:29 PM EST)

Healthy eating and budget: two words that don’t seem to go together. We all want to eat healthy, but can we do so on a budget? As many of us know, eating healthy can often become very difficult when you’re tight with grocery money. Join us for a live chat on Wednesday, November 5th at 3pm ET and you could learn the tricks to eat healthy and maintain your budget! Not to mention a $25 Target gift card will be awarded to one lucky recipient and five others will receive 250 Gather Points™!

Carolyn O’Neil, a registered dietitian on Gather, recently helped assess your grocery lists and made several helpful recommendations. She’s a strong proponent of eating healthy for less. She recommends always having milk in your diet as at about 25 cents per 8 ounce glass, on a gallon basis, milk offers more nutrients per penny than almost any other beverage option in the supermarket!

Carolyn will be joining us to discuss eating healthy while on a budget and looking for your suggestions too! Have a question for Carolyn but can’t make the chat? Leave it in the comment field below. If you can make it, we’ll see you here tomorrow at 3pm ET for a great chat that you’re sure to benefit from! This is an open forum for you to relax, sit back, and talk with other hard working moms.  (Note: When you join the chat, please remember to frequently refresh your browser as to not miss any of Carolyn’s answers! )

Sounds great...except it's during business hours, so this hard working mom will actually be at work, working hard. I doubt I'll make it.

I will still try to read it, thought...I can always use help at the grocery store.

We are a family of 4 and go through about 4 gallons of milk each week! My kids LOVE milk! Even with the high cost of milk right now, it's ALWAYS in our fridge because I know how important it is to my kids!

And I'd much rather have them drinking milk all day instead of juice. We limit juice to a glass a day and they usually choose milk over juice anyways! :)

That makes ME a HAPPY MOM!!!!

Hello there! Here we go...and the first question is an important one. Any time there are food allergies or special diet needs in a family it creates more challenges for food shopping. Of course, I would say to check the ingredients list on packaged foods to see if whey is included.

Bridget Jean...wow you've got a milk loving family. What kind of milk do you buy?
And for everyone...when you put milk on your grocery list a good way to figure out how much to buy is to figure that each family members needs three cups of milk a day. That's not a lot but it's just the right amount to get all of the good nutrition they need. So a cup in cereal, a cup at lunch or dinner and then with a snack at bedtime. Hey, a cup of milk is great in soups too. Another money saving food to put on your list.

Whether you're on the hunt for fruits and veggies...hello to Sarah!!!....or other foods on a limited budget start with a shopping list. Divide it into food groups!! Look for meats on sale...stores seem to have lots of special right now to attract customers and please know that canned fruit is often just as nutritious as fresh..and can be less expensive.

Sarah I find that apples, oranges, and bananas are the less expensive fruits. Oranges can be pricey but you get the much needed vitamin c from them.

Also fruit variety yogurts will provide some fruit nutrients and you can buy the store brands.

Mary G...I think there are a couple of different ways to look at the cost of food...I like to compare the price for what I'm getting. Based on national average of milk prices right now ..one 8 ounce glass costs about a quarter and you get 9 essential nutrients.
That's a great value, really!!!

We use "raw organic milk" from a neighborhood farm that has gotten clearance and is inspected regularly. It is higher in fat, but tastes really good and we can skim some of the cream off the top...

Canned fruit as healthy as fresh??? Doesn't the canning process reduce the nutritional value? My kids won't eat canned fruit anyway, which is another challenge. Living in a tropical climate, fruit goes bad so fast and I have a hard time getting to the store every 2 days for fresh.

My son is allergic to tomatoes so it limits alot of things I can make for the family.

I have read that organic fruits and veggies may actually be worse on the environment since they require so much more space and resources to grow them.

What are your thoughts?

I was told that if your child drinks a lot of milk, it is worth it to buy the organic milk that way the child is not getting the hormones or antibiotics. Does it really make a difference?

i've been able to find some canned fruit that doesn't have syrup in it - you have to really read labels though!

I am also looking for meal ideas for a picky toddler--that are healthy. He will eat your basic "kid" foods--chicken nuggets, fries, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese (which I don't like to even cook)...he will ANY fruit, but I'm at a loss for meals that he will eat with the family!

Laura, thank you. I am actually going to try buying organic frozen fruits today for smoothies! I want to try and get more calcium, vit d, and fruits!

Sarah, I don't mind it too much, but I'd love to add a few pounds (maybe 10-15).

I'm with April - you can find canned fruit without the syrup and it's great!

Oh on the canned fruit thing.....OF COURSE....fresh picked peaches or apples are absolutely fabulous!!! But, since most kids today are not getting even two servings of fruit they need a day...I think it's a good solution to put canned peaches ( choose those packed in juice not syrup) on top of frozen waffles or use frozen fruit in a smoothie with milk for a snack... What does everyone else think?? We've got to be creative to save some money and still get the healthy stuff on the table!!
