The weight of the world is on my shoulders today...

So much is at stake...

The decisions we will make today are so much harder than deciding which pie is best.

So much hangs in the balance...
The lives of unborn children...
The fate of family farms like my own father's...

The future of many small businesses... perhaps even my own...
The price we will pay in lives lost... now, or heaven forbid, later, as we determine new foreign policy...
The financial future of families, companies, every country in the world...
Global reprecussions... Moral repurcussions...
Is it any wonder I'm in the mood for a little comfort food?

My Grandma on my Dad's side made Chicken Pie... Savory and spicy just like her.

My Grandma on Mom's side made apple...

Pumpkin...

Cherry, Peach, Strawberry Rhubarb and Blueberry, too...

Sweet and fragrant just like her.

When we harvested apples, we all got together. Mom made the pie crust. I rolled it out into big 9 and 10" circles.

The two Grandmas peeled and sliced the apples using a perry knife. No cutting board. No fancy gadgets. Just loving hands.

Mom added cinnamon, sugar, maybe a little nutmeg and cloves. I made pretty designs in the top crust, pinched the edges together.

We would make a dozen or so in one setting. Freeze them so they would be ready to bake whenever there was a special occasion... a family gathering.

Comfort. I take comfort in pies.

And today, I need some bad.

My Grandma Victoria would be praying for our country today, if she were still alive.

I shall do the same...
While I have a slice of pie.

Cheer up - no matter who wins this - it is bound to be a step up from the Current Occupant (this is a European point of view, I know, but then, what the heck, I live in Europe!)
I just had some lentils, but a piece of one or the other of the pies would go down very nicely as dessert!
And by the way, those pies look amazing ...
