Bombings kill 6, wound at least 23 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD – A string of bombings in the Iraqi capital killed six people and wounded at least 23 others Monday, including a senior Oil Ministry official, authorities said.

The six people died when two bombs — one of them hidden in a trash can — exploded in Tahariyat square in central Baghdad during the morning rush hour. Police said 21 people were wounded, including 10 policemen and two women.

Police spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The explosions caused extensive damage to shops lining the square in Baghdad's predominantly Shiite east half of the city.

Meanwhile, Abdul-Sahib Salman Qutub, one of three senior undersecretaries in the Oil Ministry, suffered minor injuries when a bomb went off at his house as he left for work, ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said.

Jihad said Qutub's driver was seriously injured in the attack.

Israel is not subject to Bush and his blood for oil wars. All Israel has to do to achieve peace is move back over their borders and learn how to negotiate in an honest way. The countries in the Middle East have to negotiate their own peace without the British, French, and especially America which does nothing unless their is a profit in it.

Unfortunately, the US and European powers have been meddling in middle east affairs for a long, long time -- mostly over oil. That's a big reason it's such a massive pile of conflicts.

Well Robert it doesn't mean it has to go on like this. We can never become energy independent by keeping our ties to Middle East oil which also pays for terrorism by Saudi Arabia and other fanatical countries. We need to cut the lines to the oil wells and move on.

I agree with you Jack, in part. Energy independence is necessary, But, meanwhile I think our approach should be more along the lines of offering to contract with middle east countries, for our technology helping them get the oil out of the ground in exchange for considerations in purchase of that oil, or... investing in other sources, such as Canadian shale extraction. Both of these ways would be preferable to invading and controlling, as well as dumping depleted uranium over the lands of peoples we hope won't come to hate us for it and retaliate, and/or, at the very least, withhold or impede our access to other oil sources in the region.

We can never become energy independent by supporting terrorist states like Saudi Arabia, we need to fund real energy independence and if Exxon does not like it let them hold a bake sale to boost their profits.
