Of course Cheney appreciates McCain’s high-profile longstanding support for his pet project, the Iraq war, as well as the general support McCain has given to the administration in Senate voting the past few years, but why would anyone think Cheney’s endorsement is useful for McCain’s election campaign?
George W. Bush endorsed and early voted for John McCain, but after conspicuous absence on the campaign trail due to low approval numbers, why would Vice-President Cheney, with even lower approval numbers, and a disapproval numbers representing two-thirds of Americans, make a public endorsement of John McCain?
Here’s what Cheney said: "In three days we'll choose a new steward for the presidency and begin a new chapter in our history," the Vice President said Saturday morning. "It's the biggest decision that we make together as Americans. A lot turns on the outcome. I believe the right leader for this moment in history is Senator John McCain."
Why would anyone think Cheney’s endorsement would help McCain? Was the idea of this endorsement an appeal to voters who respect the office of vice-president no matter who is in it, or is this a desperate attempt to motivate their base?

I have learned from commenting on another one of your articles, that I must be careful about stating my opinions. So I hope this one is clear. Thanks for a great post. Ellen B
Congress has a nine percent approval rating compared to Bush 30 percent.
McCain and Obama have both been part of his congress. Ellen, you accuse Bush of being criminal. I accuse the entire congress.
Although the Republicans have saddled the American people with massive problems, including the break down of the co-equal powers of government specified in the Constitution, Republican-Lite (the Democrats) are nearly as bad. A lot of them have gone along with it. They are clearly spineless and many of them are complicit in the continuation of illegal, or otherwise damaging policy. I don't like the way Obama voted for the Patriot Act re-authorization and the bail out.
But ... There are only two candidates in this race and choosing McCain would be close to choosing another four years of Bush neocon catastrophe. And if McCain doesn't live out the average life expectancy, we have a President Palin, who 59% of the public doesn't think is ready for the job. Obama may not be the political messiah, but the other guy is the extension of certain disaster we can't absorb at this point.
Criminal is a technical legal term, but Cheney and many others in the administration have violated ethical and moral standards most of us would establish. Also, Cheney was the guy who said the Iraq war would last a couple of weeks to a month. He said, "we know with certainty that Saddam has reconstituted his nuclear weapons program", and in 2005 he said the insurgency "is in its last throes." Either his judgment is very bad, or his skills at deception are very good. Either way an endorsement for McCain isn't very stellar.
