Before leaving for trick 'a treating, Sage wanted to show me the pumpkins they carved the night be
fore. She really liked her father's "Wolves Howling in the Night"
Then it was into the night of ghosts, goblins, witches, and phantoms.

I was curious how the girls would react....but they took the evening in stride...going up to each door and knocking away. "Happy Halloween, Happy Halloween" they would say.

Along the way, they met others out and about and Sage would draw near to either Mama or me. Julia loved meeting classmates in costume and they would share secrets of "houses not to miss."

At a "party house" (that's what Sage called it), some teenagers were having great fun wrapping each other up in toilet paper.

And then there were the houses where strange things happened.....vapors of death and creatures screaming.

But the girls were brave....intent on the task......

Both Lena and I were relieved at last when Julia remarked that her legs were quite weary and couldn't we hurry our bodies home fast. Back home once more, the girls were ecstatic to show Paul and Papa the loot that they had gathered.

A night of adventure
A night to remember
A night when two girls
Did not protest slumber.

As a kid I never cared for Halloween. I thought it was kind of "creepy" to go to strange people's houses in the dark of night. I always begged my mother to take us home. My sister loved it, but I didn't like it one bit. And I dreaded it when my kids were small, too, because my son was "hypoglycemic" and would go into a kind of trance if he got too much sugar. He was very good about it, though. Having a protein snack before going out and then eating only one piece of candy before giving his jack o'lantern full of candy out to other children. My daughter tried to be a good example by not eating more than one piece, too, because she didn't want him to feel bad. I guess it was character-building, though. We put most of our efforts into creating imaginative costumes and into the play-acting aspect of the night, and the kids seemed to take pleasure in passing out their stash to older kids who came to the door after they had come home. Perhaps that experience influenced them both to expend a great deal of time and energy in the performing arts. Who knows? It's hard to say...
Watching the girls survey their loot brought memories to me of my own boys doing the same.
We ALL had fun on the town! Lol
I couldn't believe some of the decorations. Some people go all out for this holiday.
I was wiped! Rested all Saturday and played around on Gather.
I couldn't believe how brave the girls were....course Sage was singing the whole time...making up her own little lyrics about everything we were seeing.
"It's make believe, it's just pretend, not real, not real, not real" was her mantra.
Thanks for posting this to Best Original Photos, Art and Writing for 2008
That is great that you all got to share such a fun time together.
Did you go out with Johnny Depp?
I can't imagine trick a treatin' at a mall. Sounds pretty dumb to me. The whole excitement of the night is going out into the dark and knocking on doors with the expectation of booty if you are BRAVE! I'm sure glad my town still does it the old way.
I went out with MY Johnny Depp on spookly-Ookly day and filled our bags with lots of pirate plunder!!!
LOL :)

I HOPE YOU ARE FEELING BETTER! HAVE SOME SOUP AND REST YOU'LL BE GOOD AS NEW!
Salem, Massachusetts is a great place to visit on Halloween. We once did the Witch tour when Zach was young.
You had some scary scenes on your walk. My son early on decided he had more fun handing out candy and seeing the kids faces light up then going trick or treating.
Are you sure it was just the kids who did not protest slumber?
You could be a Night Owl. Who! Who!
First time I've been on the town on Halloween night since Zach was in 6th grade. We had a great time...but I was bone weary the next day.
Grandkids are a blast! They keep you young!
You're a winner of zoomit's Halloween costume contest. Thanks for participating.

Congratulations!
