3-A-Day of Dairy and Other Breakfast Tips From the Blogosphere
Now that school has been in session for about a month, I decided to take a trip around the blogosphere to see what other folks were cooking up for breakfast and to see if I could shake out more tips on how to start the day out smoothly.
Simply Breakfast is a beautiful blog with charming photos. When I saw the breakfast of cottage cheese topped with halved cherry tomatoes and cracked pepper with a hard-boiled egg on the side, I stopped in my tracks. I am one of those "savory" breakfast people and I swear, as soon as I finish writing this post, I am headed to the store for cottage cheese. I love low-fat cottage cheese (small or large curd) and usually have it as a snack, but for breakfast? Even better! And this is something that older kids can easily make themselves.
Over at Vi's Pantry, she's whizzing up Golden Smoothies, a mouth-watering blend of yogurt, tropical fruits, honey, and flax seeds. If you are stuck in a smoothie rut, be inspired to seek out mangoes, kiwi, and passion fruit for your next breakfast blend.
One of my other blogging friends has a thing for cheese and eggs and she shares several variations on the theme from Swiss-cheesy quiches to melty mozzarella breakfast pizzas. Best of all, quiches can be made in advance and eaten over several days. A side of fresh fruit completes the meal.
Kinder Info has some great tips for getting the day started off right. They suggest setting the breakfast table the night before including the non-perishables. This makes terrific sense. Why not try setting the bowls, spoons, and boxes of cereal out before bed, and in the morning, just add milk. (Also, the brushing teeth at the kitchen sink tip? Brilliant!)
Directory M reminds us not to forget the protein: yogurt, low-fat cheese cubes, and milk on cereal are not only nutritious, but can help kids to feel fuller longer. Kids need fuel for learning, so don't skip breakfast in the morning.
A half hour tour around the blogosphere has yielded some fantastic tips and inspiring recipes. No getting stuck in a breakfast rut here! If you have a favorite, unusual or special breakfast recipe, I'd love to hear about it. Please share in the comments below!
