The Beginning
My wife and I met in April of 1995. Both of us were vocal to everyone else, but shy when it came to each other. We were in college at Chattanooga State and they had a place called the Smokers Lounge, where a bunch of us went to eat lunch or just hang out between classes. It was there I would meet my future wife Lisa. I had been in a bad short lived relationship and had failed to achieve a date with another lady I found attractive. Pretty bummed, I sat in the lounge taking to a friend of mine. In walks this lady, attractive, looking angry, and not seeming very personable. I asked my friend what her problem was and was told she had had relationship problems. He called her over and introduced us to each other. Now normally, this is the point in the story where the author would tell you that they went out and the rest was history. Not in this case, but close. Before parting, I had her laughing and she went home that day smiling.
For two weeks I fell hard and fast for her. Lisa, when not in class, was in the lounge hanging out with my group. When she wasn't around, I was driving our friends crazy, talking about her and wondering if she could like me. What I didn't know was that she had been doing the same thing. Finally, a friend of ours named Jessica couldn't take it anymore. Lisa and I were both sitting at the table laughing and talking when Jessica decided to make her move. Standing up, she leaned over the table towards us and made an announcement.
"F this S___!( She actually cussed us. ) You like her! She likes you! Will you two either go out or shut the __ up?"
Needless to say both of our faces were a bright shade of red. I looked at her and said something like "ummm... well...would you like to go to a movie tonight?" She replied "yes." After getting her phone number and address, as well as setting a time, I quickly slipped out, vowing to kill Jessica, but secretly happier than I had been in a long time.
Leaving there I went straight to the barber shop and got a haircut. I had long hair and figured she needed someone that looked respectable. I went home after that and found the dress clothes I wanted to wear. Clothes like these were totally out of character for me but I wasn't going to meet her parents looking like some metal head, so I had chosen a light blue Dress shirt and Khaki slacks and tennis shoes (Hey I had to draw the line somewhere). As the time arrived I dressed and spruced up, shaving my goatee, and headed out. The night was about to get interesting.
Arriving at her house, I walked up to the front door and rung the doorbell stepping back. I hear a voice.
"Lisa! Your date is here!"
This was followed heavy footsteps and my heartbeat beginning to rise. The door opens and there stood her father. Both of our jaws dropped as we looked each other up and down. It was at this point that Lisa came to the door. She joined us in this jaw drop.
"Oh My God! I'm going out with my dad!"
