There is no greater safeguard of freedom than the separation of church and state.
Lately I have seen a spate of letters about same-sex marriage, abortion, creationism and such that seem to advocate replacing the Constitution with the Bible. America is great because, while we are all free to practice our respective faiths, we do not have the right to impose our faiths on others via legislation.
Letting religion dictate policy leads to state sponsored faith and a theocracy. Just ask the citizens of Iran or Saudi Arabia how much freedom that entails.
Fan of “traditional” marriage? Then marry someone of the opposite gender. Dislike abortion? Don't have one. Believe in creationism? Teach it at home.
The rest of us have the right to enjoy our constitutionally guaranteed freedom and not be forced to adhere to such agendas.

And another quote, this one from 11th article of the Treaty of Tripoli (1796)- "As the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion............". 'Nuff said.

The revolution was started by business people that did not want to pay taxes not on any religious belief. The constitution states that "government will make no rules concerning religion."
Federal law also prohibits any religious group from supporting a political party because of their nonprofit standing.
