As has been the case since they started the survey in 1972, Pew Research has found that Republicans are happier than Democrats. Even when controlling for other factors such as income, education and maritial status, being a Republican has a significant positive correlation with happiness.
The study also found that Republicans were different than Democrats in that:
- They have more money.
- They have more friends.
- They are more religious.
- They are healthier.
- They are more likely to be married.
- They like their communities better.
- They like their jobs more.
- They are more satisfied with their family life.
- They like the weather better.
- They have fewer financial worries.
- They're more likely to see themselves doing better in life than their parents did.
- They're more likely to feel that individuals - rather than outside forces - control their own success or failure.
- They have more of what they most value in life. (No, it's not money).

I sent off my two absentee ballots today..... one was for my wife. (she voted for McCain too)
I am glad there is happiness out there. I am normally a very happy person.
I've been really happy for a good deal of my life, and even happier this last decade.
Now, this very happy Republican is having one of the happiest years of her life, and she happily voted for Obama!
Funny how this happiness thing gets itself worked out in reality, huh?
I became happy getting around groovy liberals !!!
That's a fact ???
It also shows Democrats place less interest on getting married, which kinda throws that breaking announcement out the window...
Still, interesting. You'll be pleased to know the Stepford Wives rated even higher than Republicans.
I'm happier being a Democrat!
Obama/Biden
Dan - Dems volunteer. Writing checks is easy and you don't have to be around all those distasteful people.
I don't know who volunteers more, My step mother has worked with the YWCA for years, I know I would consider her "conservative" so probably are many of her fellow YWCA volunteers.
I remember back a few years, remember the Bosina/Herzegovina affair? the YWCA volunteers had decided to send blankets to the refugees resulting from that conflict. I at the time was employed as a fabric cutter for a company building polaltec jackets for REI.
We had a lot of substandard fabric on hand and I convinced management to allow me to cut it into quilting squares and donate it to my step mother's volunteer group. Thousands of yards of polar tec material I cut on my own time to give to this group, we also found during inventory hundreds of polar tec finger gloves fabric pre cut that the company donated to my step mother's volunteer group which they sewed up and donated to local schools that made them available to children who's family coulden't afford to buy them.
And if the Republicans are so happy what was up with that convention? Ours looked like more fun.
In addition, happy people don't spend their lives criticizing others because they don't like them or their lifestyle.
But just like with Moderate's statement which doesn't appy to all neither are all republicans unhappy. Just many of them that I knew of and have observed.
So I guess your declaration that Democrats volunteer more is set to rest.
-- Conservatives also donate more time and give more blood.

The information comes from, Arthur C. Brooks, a professor at Syracuse University, published "Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism.
Not from George Will.
You are right. It did seem to get the dander up. I was not trying to make a value judgment, just pass on something I find interesting.
I am not and have never been a Republican. I think of myself as an independent, voting for candidates rather than parties. Baring some earth shattering event, I will vote for Obama next month. I have a lot more experience with Democrats and have always voted in the Democratic primary. Couple that with my fiscal conservatism and I feel comfortable calling myself a Blue Dog Democrat.
Dan,
You cite a very interesting article. Since it is by George Will I take it with a grain of salt. However it is consistent with the revelation that Joe Biden, in each of the last 10 years, has made between $215,000 and $320,000 and never given more than $995 to charity. http://gregmankiw.blogspot.com/2008/09/bidens-charity-aversion.html
Sharon et. al.
I have never seen any hard data on party affiliation and intelligence or propensity to volunteer. That leaves us to our own anecdotes, which are not terribly reliable.
Too bad. :o)
Dems should be more happier since they delight in telling others how to live and spend their money. Obviously they are that much more secure personally!
