Anyone Else Click on the Games.com Ads Appearing on Gather?

So I am a sucker for online casino games and other traditional games. A few days ago I had some extra time, and I finally clicked on one of the Gather Games.com ad banners. I have been up late playing poker ever since, lol.

I'm not an AOL subscriber, but I did used to have their instant messaging program on my last computer and remembered my screen name and login info.

Has anyone else been lured over there or already over there?

What games do you like to play?

Anyone else play their WSOP poker in the rooms with others? Maybe we should have a Gather game sometime.

I clicked it by accident Marianne, and although I was tempted I quickly looked to see if you got points to redeem for anything, and when this was not the case I quickly closed it down. I know from experience how addictive games can be:)

Not me. I had turned off all expanding ads (games.com & coffee-mate), and decided today to turn off ALL ads on Gather.

I play solitaire occasionally on my laptop when traveling, but I'm not really a 'game person', unless it's a board game (played in the traditional way).

Chris, are you using Firefox? You can get an ad-block add on. I was using it for a month, then my cat walked across the keyboard and it's not working anymore. I can't figure out how to fix it cause it still works on all ads except a few of the more annoying ones.

Marianne, I spend far too much time here and I got sucked into Winster through MyPoints. I paid for one month membership there. I lost track of when I joined. I am madder than hell that they autobilled my PayPal account for a second month, with no notice that my time was up or did I want to stay a member. Grrrrrrrrrrr

Kevin, good for you! I'm sick of all the poop Gather heaps on us and expects us to deal with, but we are still supposed to be annoyed by their roll-down, flashing ads. If they listened to us to what we want with more cooperation, I wouldn't mind the ads so much.

Chris, yes, it's a Firefox add-on. It is easy to find the Mozilla Firefox browser and download it, doesn't take very long. I am a computer dummy and I managed to do it.

When you download Firefox, IE is still on your computer so you can use either one, but the ad-blocker will only work with Firefox

There are two different types of ads on Gather...'Flash' ads (ads with animation) and static ads. You can remove both types of ads easily in Firefox AND Internet Explorer. The Flash ads are the most annoying and can incorporate roll-over effects like expansion across a page, or displaying a pop-up window.

I prefer to block both types of ads using separate techniques because in some cases you WANT to see flash components on a page. You can also block specific ads, or ads only displayed on a certain page or site.

If you're interested in doing this yourself, I'll cover the steps tomorrow at the HelpCenter.

Note: In some cases, your view of the ad (called an 'impression') generates income for Gather. Preventing the display of some ads will take away that revenue.

I'll be looking for it tomorrow then Kevin. I don't want to use Firefox though. I can say that there is a certain ad I would love to block and there is no way I am clicking on it no matter how much revenue it brings Gather.

In regards to Winster. I was not wrong. I joined on Sept 24, when I went to cancel my subscription on Oct 23, I found they had auto-charged my Paypal for a second term. Auto-billing must be in their TOS, cause I have never signed up to auto-bill anything. They refer to their membership as 'monthly'. Their version of month ended on Oct 22, which was 28 days. How many months have 28 days? So they are gouging members for 13 months a year. That place is such a rip off, people are losing money by the hours they spend there.

Marianne -- Sorry to hijack your thread.

Patricia -- I've decided to turn off all ads because Gather prevents members from displaying more than 20 or 25 mail messages, photos or articles/posts per page. We are allowed to increase the page counts on some pages, but not on those that would have the greatest traffic and benefit to members. Thus, as most other sites provide this capability today - and have for a looong time, Gather is likely restricting this intentionally to drive up the number of ad views on the site. While it won't have any affect on Gather's direction in this regard, I am turning off all ads and will gladly instruct others in how to do so.

When you joined Winster, Patricia. It automatically sets up a PayPal subscription. If you know you only want to join for a month, then you cancel like a few days before and you won't be auto-billed. I love it over there simply to play those slots, BUT I do clear about $20 in GCs a month too, making my subscription worth it.

I'm going to ask Kevin to help turn off the ads right now - I tried the game one and it filled my computer with spy ware. That is not fair.

I’ll be glad when Gather fixes the email notifications. I wanted to thank you for your comment on the ghost story (sort of) about my Dad.

Patricia, I was just about to click on an ad for the games (it's now offering points for contributing at games.gather.com and did have a Gather member game -- of Gin Rummy -- on Oct. 31), but clicked through to another page before I saw the ad. I'm an avid Texas Hold 'Em player, so playing with other Gather folks would be a real treat. Luckily, when I searched for poker, your post (along with the games ad on top) came up!!

I'll check out the site to see if poker is an upcoming option. I'll have to recall my AOL info too. Thanks for the head's up on that.

It's tempting me, but I haven't checked it out yet. Usually I like to play word games and those bejeweled-type games. I've played on pogo and livesearch in the past but neither are as rewarding as I'd like. I recently signed up at winster.com and been playing my 200 free plays a day over there, sloooowly accumulating points toward a prize (a 500 point mypoints bonus, they also offer amazon gc) and trying to decide if it's a good use of gaming time and if I want to sign up for the smallest monthly subscription, which would boost point winnings significantly. Just not sure it's worth it yet. I do pretty well with the scrabble type game they have, get a few thousand points a day, but it's still going to be a while before I see that mypoints bonus.

Lune, they have an interesting scrabble type collapse game that I have played a few times. I also had a blast with Family Fued recently. I'm spending way too much time over there playing all kinds of games.

I saw the ad, but I didn't click on it. I joined Winster through Mypoints too, and I've been working on the 500 points from them, but I barely have time to play over there.. I just log in most days to get my spins credited so when I do have time to play, i have plenty of plays to use instead of just the 100 limit. I just dont have the time for another game site :O) Games ae so addicting! I used to have a paid Pogo account, but I cant even go near that site..I'll be lost for hours and I just dont have the time LOL

Nope. I hate all the ads here. Crap, I never have time to play games anyway. LOL I do good to even have time to comment on here, which is why I'm so rarely ever here anymore. I think time has sped up or something.
