My boys and I decided (well okay I decided) to go bird hunting today. I loaded them and my pup into my pickup and headed out. We stopped at one of my favorite waterholes, but didn't find any ducks, however we did see three bull elk, which my boys thought was pretty cool, well I did too because we usually don't see elk in that area. We started looking for the wild horses in that area, but we were unable to find them.
We then went to a lake where the hunting can be ok provided a person doesn't mind walking to get to the good areas. My boys and I walked about two miles today, and had a blast. somebody had left the water gates open early this summer and drained the lake. we walked in the lake bed following the creek channel watching carp swim across the top of the water, and the shore birds running around. We did jump some ducks, but I'm kinda rusty, and missed the first few shots, but I did manage to bag one duck. My pup did ok for a pup who really only knows her basic obedience (sometimes, when she feels like it).
I ended up muddy and wet, which my kids thought was hilarious, because my dog hasn't quite grasped the concept of retrieving yet. I can't complian though, she did try, sort of, she went up to the duck and sniffed it and then laid down and looked at it.
The only complaint I have about today is I forgot to bring the camera. Matthew wasn't happy about that because he likes to take pictures, and it would have been nice to get some pictures of the elk. All in all it was a great day getting out of town. Tomorrow we are going to a hot air balloon festival, should be interesting.

I've never been duck hunting, but wouldn't mind going some day. I saw a lot of Bull Elk last week myself, and some were still chasing the Cows (females folks) around, with a little bugling as well.

John, I had an early season cow tag here, but was not able to fill my tag. I did however see a very large bull that I plan to hunt next year during our archery season. We have an excellent elk population here, and its nice to see that the elk are moving back out into the desert. As far as my dog goes she is only 6 months old, and I have put more time into obediance training right now than actual retrieving training. She is coming along pretty well though, I don't have any complaints.
