I just read the following article on Yahoo: Report: Kids Less Likely to Graduate than Parents. I was mortified. The article went on to say that the drop out rate is 25% and goals for improvement in some states are very low. This could seriously effect our competitiveness as a nation-- not to mention the fate of these individual children who face the workplace at a serious disadvantage.
But I know from experience that some kids have a problem with the traditional high school environment. It took a lot of work and envolvement from me to get my son graduated. The article focuses on school responsibility but parents need to realize that you can't expect to drop your kid off at Kindergarten and pick them up on Commencement Day thirteen years later.
Parents need to seek viable alternatives, and school counselors should communicate those alternatives when they can. My son was in PSEO and took college classes at the Community College his senior year. He only had to go to the high school part of the day. I also home schooled him through English 11 one summer and the credit transfered into his regualr high school.
Has anyone else had difficulty? What are some alternatives you have tried to make sure your child keeps up his education?
