"Where the Wild Things Are" - Maurice Sendak

I think I love this book because in only ten sentences, it tells a complete story.

"Rebecca", with Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, is one of my favorite movies as well.

I don't really have a favorite. I consume mysteries like crazy. That is my fast food reading, you know keeps me from running the streets and getting into trouble. My mom bought me a little Maurice Sendak collection when I was a kid, it came in a little box and had Chicken Soup and Rice and Pierre, I Dont Care (4 books altogether) in it. When I saw it was missing I went out and bought it because it held such magic memories for me. I read The Women's Room by Marilyn French a bunch of times because of its theme of feminism of the lives of women from the fifties to the seventies.

My favorite childhood fiction book is "The Wizard of Oz." My favorite book as an adult is "To Kill a Mockingbird." The "Wizard of Oz" covers just about everything that life is about while "To Kill a Mockingbird" demonstrates the evil of prejudice.

My favorite of all time is Harriet Arnow's Doll Maker. It's the story of a Kentucky family that moves to Detroit and the culture clash they experience. It's heartbreaking and emotionally complex, with plot and well-drawn characters.

I never read "The Women's Room", Chana- I'll have to check it out.

I don't think I ever read the Wizard of Oz, Joe- just saw the movie a million times. I do love "To Kill A Mockingbird". Pass the damn ham!

As a young child my very favorite book was 'The Invisible Island' by Dean Marshall. It is no longer in print and it was written well before technology stole our children. I read this book to all four of my children when they were old enough to sit still long enough to listen. I loved reading to my children. Two of my favorites are 'Gone with the Wind', it's so much better than the movie and 'To Kill a Mockingbird' also much better than the movie. I've read these two books more than once each. But today, I'm a mystery novel lover, I read them endlessly, hey I also like western novels, Stephen King and Dean Koontz are always good reads. 'The Doll Maker' is well worth the read, gives you an insight into another time in America. There are so many.........

That sounds like a good book Lee! I looked it up on Amazon; you can get a used copy for $98 and up! I even checked our library database online- no luck. Now I really want to read it...

Good Heavens, Nancy! I'm sure that we didn't pay any more than a $1.00 for it in 1948. We were considered poor and therefore a $1.00 for a book was all the budget would allow. I still have my hard copy. Another good read for older children is 'Where The Red Fern Grows', it's another book that is better than the movie even though the movie was good.

Mine is an all time favorite and series, Little House on the Praire, by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was presented these when I was 10 yrs old and still have them today, and my little girl Hannah is now enjoying them. Thanks Wilma!!!

Little House on the Prairie books are a true classic. That's great that you kept them to share with your daughter; it will be a good memory for both of you.

There are several versions of the "Wizard of Oz," Nancy. The original by Frank Baum is difficult to acquire. I read my grandmother's book when I was around thirteen years old. It was much better than the movie, if you can imagine.
