While we were in Georgia, we took Elliott to a pumpkin farm. Since he's obviously not old enough to carve a pumpkin, or patient enough to appreciate the carving process...I had decided I would let him paint his pumpkin. He loves to color, and we are working on learning new colors, so I figured this would be a good project for him anyway. Also, I love to scrapbook, and I thought it would be fun to scrapbook the pumpkin farm and him painting his pumpkin together!
I recently saw the contest for the children's carving/painting contest, and thought I would enter just for fun. He will be two in December, and this was the first time I've ever let him paint. (Yes, I'm one of those clean mothers.)
I put one of our old t-shirts on him as a smock, and I used some mail flyers on the table to catch any stray brush strokes! For his first time, he behaved really well, and I think he did a good job. (But I'm mom, so I'm allowed to think that, LOL!)
He had a lot of fun, and I enjoyed watching him! These are just a few of the many pictures I took. He loves walking past his pumpkin on display...he always says "I pay pump-puh!" which of course tranlates to "I painted the pumpkin!"

This was such a success in our house, that I think I am going to try it with my two year old class at church. We have 6 children this year, with three regular teachers. I am hoping to drag my husband downstairs to my class so that he and I can take one or two at a time to another room, instead of having six 2-3 year olds painting at once, LOL! Wish us luck!

Next year if you're feeling brave, pick up some cheap 'shiny pretty stuff' from the dollar store (pom poms, google eyes, pipe cleaners) and let him add those too I bet he'd have loads of fun with that. Get more complex every year.
Before long you'll end up with a world class pumpkin artist on your hands. :)
I have all kinds of crafty things in my house already (I scrapbook), so I considered that...but this was the first time he'd ever painted, so I figured we'd take baby steps! Next year I will definitely let him go crazy with it!
Thanks everyone~Elliott had a great time...I can't wait to pick out his next craft/project!
