For most of my married life, Papa was the lord in the kitchen. He prepared all the meals. I remember one time when Will came home all excited from an overnight at a friend's house in first grade all excited, "Mom, Joshua's Mom cooks!" To him, that was extremely odd. As a result, all three boys have followed in their father's footsteps...they have developed their own styles...but they are very much at home in the kitchen.
After our house burnt down in 2002 and we were designing the new house, Will asked if he could design "a working kitchen". It certainly sounded like a plan to me. I knew nothing about creating "a working triangle"...he obviously did! I told him my budget allowed for $5000. for the kitchen and that's all he could have. Would you believe this kitchen cost less then that?
So now I have this wonderful kitchen. When Will is home he loves cooking here...as does Zach and Trisha....and now Lena comes over and prepares wonderful meals here. As for me, I don't mind doing the dishes once the meal is completed.

Notice how many windows I have to the outside. Will thought we should have more cabinets, but I thought it more important to feel I was in a tree house. What do you need with a lot of storage space if you don't cook?

Now if you are feelin' sad that this kitchen may not have "realized" it's full potential, feel sad no longer....it is well used, just not by me.

After college, Will lived in Japan while he was designing Toyota's website for hybrid cars (Will majored in Japanese at Oxy) and since he designed the kitchen, that's what he called it.
I would love to have that kitchen - the view is glorious.
That's what many people have said when they come to visit....real cooks, I mean. It is rather ironic that the kitchen belongs to someone who can't cook.
The view is gorgeous. I could never see a plain wall behind the sink or just one little window looking out on the water.
Freatured in the Triple Name Club.
Whispering..I just do dishes too.
I love the kitchen that Will designed ... it's perfect for writing in, painting figurines and meditation. LOL
At times I feel guilty having a big kitchen that has ample room with all the various "stations" so that more then one person can cook at a time. But then, I smile, because it's because I have this neat kitchen that people (real cooks) come over and "offer" to cook a meal for us.
Inquiring minds want to know.......... where DO you store everything? It seems we never have enough cupboard space, no matter what. So everything fits in the cabinets we see in the photo?
You know over the past two years reading some posts on Gather...actually seeing the images of fantastic soups, main dishes and desserts, I have thought to myself, come summer when I'm out of school, I think I might just take up cooking...I mean, real cooking. But then summer comes and I find myself outside, in the garden or on the trail. Then I think to myself, it's much to hot to stay inside, perhaps in the fall when the cold wind blows, the secrets of the kitchen can finally be untold. Right! Am I in the kitchen now? Nope. Been off gallivanting all day. So another day passes. Maybe when I'm snowed in this winter, my cooking efforts will begin.
You did have a lovely meal...did we feed you stew? I can't remember.
I knew your little secret...Tonia told me how you were the dishwasher, too. Just think Deb, if we were a couple, we would have clean dishes but nothing to eat!!! The Lord does take care of us dishwashers I believe.
Feel free, anytime, to fly across the country and use my kitchen. Come Nov. 1st Zach and Trisha are leaving to go back to Cambridge and once again I will be cookless!
You asked a very good question. There's actually more then enough storage space in the cabinets down below . One holds the trash, under the stove-top is a big cabinet for pots and pans. In the left corner cabinet facing the pond, all the cassarole dishes, bowls, etc. Under the sink the normal cleaning agents. The right cabinets under the two windows near the oven holds all the can goods and boxes of crap. Up above in both cabinets hold all the dishes. Two people don't need that much. You must remember, our house burnt down four years ago so we don't have an accumulation of all that junk you "collect" over years.
I guess we are on the same page.
It appears that many Gather women do not cook. I should take a survey.
I just got through reading your article about your trip. It looked like your romp in Boston was filled to the brim with good places, good friends and great food. Loved it and of course Dannielle's hedgies...but what about your frog?
I'll take a window into the garden over a cabinet anytime. The work triangle makes your life easier and this is indeed a well designed kitchen.
Will really knew what he was doing when he designed the kitchen. I can't take any credit for it.
Thanks Sherrie. Both you and Buzzy were up late last night.
That Will is a smart boy...whole design is his. 'Course I did say I needed windows. Actually I have 34 windows in the house....great for views...a pain in the ass for washing.
Oh, and congratulations - just wandered over from Zoomit.
