"Just again, the example of the eloquence of Sen. Obama. He's 'health for the mother.' You know, that's been stretched by the pro-abortion movement in America to mean almost anything. That's the extreme pro-abortion position, quote, 'health.'"- Sen. John McCain, during presidential debate
What's really extreme here is that John McCain doesn't understand that women's health matters.
What John McCain said last night, in front of millions of viewers, was belittling to women. He not only mocked Barack Obama for supporting women's health, he mocked women across the country. The debate last night was just the most vivid example of what we've known all along: John McCain is out of touch on women's health.
The simple fact is that we need a president who wants to protect and promote women's health, not ridicule it. If John McCain doesn't understand that, then he's not prepared to govern this country.
Remember, this is not the only example where John McCain doesn't get it when it comes to women's health.
Just a couple months back, McCain had the deer-in-the-headlights look, and couldn't answer whether he thought it was fair that insurance companies that cover Viagra should also cover birth control.
And, remember the time when McCain was asked whether he thought condoms helped stopped the spread of HIV? McCain's response, "You've stumped me."
And there's more. Let's count the ways that John McCain is out of touch on women's health and women's rights:
- He's voted 125 times against women's health.
- He wants to overturn Roe v. Wade.
- He opposes funding to prevent unintended and teen pregnancies.
- He opposes requiring health care plans to cover birth control.
- He opposes equal pay legislation, saying it wouldn't do "anything to help the rights of women."
- He's proposed a health care plan that will be worse for women.
Barack Obama, on the other hand, gets it. Obama talked about commonsense proposals to prevent unintended pregnancy. He talked about a woman, along with her family and her doctor, deciding what is best for her health care.
The simple fact is that Barack Obama is a passionate advocate for women's rights, and has a long and consistent record of standing up for women's health care. As president, he will improve access to quality health care for women, support and protect a woman's right to choose, support comprehensive sex education to keep our young people healthy and safe, and invest in prevention programs, including family planning services and breast cancer screenings.
Women voting for John McCain is like chickens voting for Col. Sanders.

McCain is just so out of it at times that it seems unreal.

Could he have been more disrespectful... of all of us??
And yes, his condescending statement about women's health really irritated me. I'm glad the moderator brought it up just so any undecided women could see him state his views.
Historically, a certain type of man has no respect for the receptacle of his sperm. I see that type of man is alive and well and running for president.
I get incredibly irritated when anyone uses the term "pro-abortion." No one is "pro-abortion." No one is suggesting that anyone be required to have an abortion. The correct term is "pro-choice." I trust women to be able to judge their own personal situations and decide for themselves if this is the appropriate choice for them.
John McCain gave women Sarah Palin to win their vote and now they want a prochoice president to?. I am sure he is just shaking his head and grimacing, "Women you just can't keep'em happy".
Still, Palin's decision to have her son despite knowing he would have Down's is one of the few that I really respect, but if she and McCain were really so concerned about saving innocent babies they would be doing more to make the choice of life a more viable one for women who find themselves both pregnant and in a difficult situation at the same time.
This includes proper education, counseling options, daycare support, real child support enforcement, etc.
I still want to see women choose life if at all possible, but I want them to come to that conclusion for the right reasons and not because they have both hands tied behind their back with a shot gun at their head.
Perhaps it's time to start flooding tv with ads about birthcontrol pills the same as they do Viagra and Cialis. Of course, the pharmceuticals wouldn't make any money so they can't be counted on to pay for the ads. But some organization might be willing to counter each "men's" ad with a push for BCP's and insurance to pay for them. Wouldn't that make a great SNL episode!
Republican sex ed: Don't have sex.
Republican counseling: See this picture of a bloody fetus? Do you want to be a murderer? Then have the damn baby.
Republican day care: what, you don't have relatives nearby?
Republican enforcement of child support: Huh? It's her fault she got pregnant. We told her not to have sex, the slut.
But McCain has shown time and again that women are just sperm ashtrays to him, but his comment in the debate was especially stupid because it was sure to alienate even more women than he and Palin has already alienated. You can see why he stays on script so much.
People want the government to have the power to say: You cannot abort your baby.
But they feel that women should bear all the burden for the choice they never had.
