And, what's wrong with someone who would be affected by Obama's tax increase to ask Obama why he would be punished with those higher taxes? I think it's a fair question.

Nothing at all wrong with asking a question Barara, what was underhanded and embarassingly transparent was claiming that he was an undecided voter. His rhetoric in the interview clearly demonstrated that Joe the Plumber was nothing more than a McCain campaign surrogate (self-appointed or otherwise). Joe can ask all the questions he wants, but he should have been honest and said he was a republican voter with a question.

I don't feel sorry for Joe the Plumber I feel sorry for the people who will be working for him, because it's clear that Joe has no interest in letting a damned thing "trickle down"

He, like many others, does not want to pay a dime of taxes. Whether they are making $50K or $250k, he does not want his money for schools, bridges, social security, anything.

McCain does not realize that with the net, his stunts won't work. Many years ago, you would have to physically go up there, search the database running on slow computers not connected to the net, print this out, and start snail mailing it.

When Katie Couric interviewed the plumber after last night's debate, he said that Obama tap-danced aroung the issues almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr. I really do not like this guy.

I don't know about where all of you folks live, but here, where we live, painters, roofers, plumbers, vinyl siding installers, folks like that, are cleaning up as far as wages are concerned. You see, a lot of folks go to college nowadays. They don't lean how to clean their gutters, much less have time to do it themselves. They don't have time to mow their yards, or they have the money to have someone else do it for them. So, Joe the Plumber is really one of hundreds of thousands who know a trade, or a skill and work for those who don't. Those folks who have that college education and are pulling in the six figures per year, will pay those on the other end of the spectrum to work for them. Government should stay out of this and allow the people at the other end to keep working and hire others to share their wealth, the way it should be, through work! This allows all of us to prosper and grow, whereas, giving to those who do not pay taxes with money from Joe the Plumber and the guy with the education, is just not right! That's socialism. What do you think those who do not pay taxes will do with those funds? I would think they would buy a big screen tv, put a dish on their home, and let the government daddy take care of them. It doesn't give incentives for someone to get off their butt and work!

I'd say don't claim to be a plumber unless you are a licensed plumber or say you are about to buy a business unless you have the resources. Or, independent when you're not. Or, undecided, when, like right.

To carry this to another level, the facts of the story apparently are that Samuel (his real name) says he plans to buy the business that makes $280,000. Now Republicans always speak of "working hard and playing by the rules" and how "the poor are poor because of fiscal irresponsibility" and here is a man talking about beconing one of the sanctified small business owners, and yet ... he hasn't even paid his taxes and apparently had to be taken to court to be made to do so for several years before. And yet he wants a government handout in the form of a tax cut.

So knowing whether Joe is independent is uber-important but investigating bribes handed out by The Charismatic Muslim Terrorist is not?

in response to Barbara's original comment- the problem with Joe the plumber mouthing off about unfair taxation is that he only made $40k last year and is light years away from actually being effected by any health insurance mandates as an employer. If he wants to buy the plumbing business he is going to need some money and a plumber's license.

This is just another example of the "sloppiness" of the McCain campaign. First he chooses Palin, with all her political baggage, now he makes a man, who this campaign obviously did not look into, a centerpiece of his final debate. What a hack!

I just bought a house and I have a plumber named Joe doing some work. He's licensed and I have no idea what his politics are.
it's really stupid the media (and everyone of us consumers) is getting into this Joe the Plumber story. We'll never really know how McCain vs. Obama's proposed tax plans will play out in reality when taxes come due. Because they might not even implement their proposed plans.
I feel bad for Joe's boss who was just outed for doing uninsured work and operating an uninsured business.

If Joe is a real guy and not a plant, he probably just learned the hard way that if you hope to buy (and profit from) a business that operates slightly outside the rules, then you should probably keep away from presidential candidates and media camps.

Well, to be fair ... Joe's boss made those choices to work outside of the rules.

Since the title of this page is "Joe Plumber ... Undecided" and the allegation is that he is not undecided and has an agenda ( horror of horrors ).

Then we can change the search for TRUTH and integrity to any sign of abusive allegations by the LMSM or esteemed members of Gather that a supposed "undecided" supporter of The CMT is truly "undecided" and does not have an hidden agenda.

Eric- anybody who is, or who claims to be, undecided at this juncture in the election campaign has got to be brain dead or lying.

Two comments on opposite sides of the issue:

1. Joe the Plumber is *not* related to Charles Keating. The initial report of this was due to a name confusion, but it shouldn't be perpetuated any further.

2. Anybody complaining about the scrutiny of Joe Wurzelbacher should recall the horrible treatment that the right wing put Graeme Frost and his family through. Examine the log in your own eye before complaining about this speck.

If the McCain campaign managed to plant Joe the Plumber in the path of Obama and somehow he managed to get Obama to say "I want to spread the wealth around" then he is the most competent person running and you should vote for him.

I tend to agree that the McCain campaign probably did not plant him. That means in my opinion, that Joe planted himself. He is a "Good Republican"who took it upon himself to put himself in Obama's path and try to ask a question that he believed would put Sen. Obama in an untennable position.

I imagine that if he'd been a plant by the McCain campaign, they would not have picked someone who could so easily have been shown to have been a registered Republican and delinquent on his taxes and they would have told him not to spout republican rhetoric while posing as an independent.

So I agree that he's not a McCain plant, but surely he planted himself.

McCain certainly picked Joe in mentioning him 22x. Maybe he ought to base his poster boy on something more than a five minutes You-tube clip.

McCain has done himself in with this, and with Palin. Both show poor judgment.
