I start by going through the flyers. I make a menu around what is on sale, what I have on hand, and what I will have time to make on what days. Then I make my list.
I usually organize it by isle so I am not roaming around the grocery store because I missed an item that was out of order on my list. I start with fruit/veg, then dairy and eggs, and ending with the breads.
This past weeks grocery list looked something like this (but not so neat :)
Sale items are marked with *:
* Apples
* Potatoes
* Baby carrots
Bananas
2 gal MILK
Nestle coffee mate creamer French vanilla (I'm addicted)
* Eggs 18 pk
* American sliced cheese
* Shredded mex mix cheese
* Shredded Mozzarella cheese
Vitamins (coupon)
asprin (store brand)
Mustard
Can olives
* small can mushrooms (store brand)
Sugar (had coupon)
* 1 fruit roll up (and coupon :)
** 2 cereals
Large box goldfish
*** (Sale $1.99#) 2 ground beef large pack
Kool aid (off brand)
* ice cream ($1.88 ½ gal)
** Deli ham $4.99 #
** Deli turkey $4.99#
* 2 Whole wheat bread (store brand)
1 pkg burger rolls (store brand)
candy (for hubby not for Halloween -he says he doesn't NEED it but whines if I forget to pack any in his lunch :)
I think that is everything I bought this week, I buy paper goods in large packs and won't run out for a while, same with detergents and personal hygine items.
In case anyone is wondering this weeks menu is:
meatloaf, mashed pot, veg
spag and meat balls (had spag and sauce from last weeks sale)
chxn (something oriental as I have lots of rice on hand and frozen chxn from last weeks sale)
Pizza w/mush, olives, and ground beef (have flour and yeast)
burgers w/home made french fries
noodles w/brown gravy and ground beef w/peas (have noodles from when they were on sale and keep brown gravy mix in cupboard, stocked up on can veg. 2 weeks ago when they had a big sale)
burritoes/ tacos (had wraps and taco shells from sale last week)
I try to get items while they are on sale, if my budget allows, I stock up if not then.. o well. I buy a lot of large pkg stuff at Costco and so do not often run out of those items :) I do try to keep the basics on hand and keep the pantry stocked with them if I can.

I really need to do some serious grocery shopping, but I haven't had the chance to yet.
milk,fruit of some sort, cider, brocoli, coleslaw,catfood,hamburger whole wheat bread. I could substitute turkey but I havent had alot of red meat lately.
And I've never thought about organizing by aisle. What a great idea!
I had to laugh at this one. Matt doesn't want junk food in the house but he whines if there aren't any chips.
