Last year, she did great at the begining of the year, but towards the end of the year, I think she picked up some MAJOR slacker tendancies from her friends, because her grades bombed, and that just isn't like her. She went from being a portion of a grade off from being on the honor roll, to having almost failing grades in 3 of her classes.
We were really hoping that she would pick up the slack again, and start off on the right foot. Right off the bat, she had a note home from her teacher in Math saying she was missing 2 of the 4 assignments, and was subsequently getting a low grade (I can't recall- D or E?) in the class. I had to sign papers and send them back in.
Since then, she's assured me time and again as I hound her to do her homework, that she's pulled it up to a B- in the class. Since the grade is averaged based on the assignments, and I knew she had turned those two missing assignments in, I figured it was possible.
So here's her grades:
Language Arts- A
Swimming- A-
Science- B+
Art- A
Social Studies- C+
Oriole Time- D+ (I have NO clue what this is)
Math- E
We have an agreement- she's supposed to get nothing lower than a C- on her report cards, or she's grounded to the house until she pulls the grades up- no friends over, no going to friends houses, no extra activities that are not academic oriented.
We don't neccisarily punish for low grades, but we have told her time and again that if she's having trouble, she needs to tell -someone- , either a teacher, or one of us, so that we know to help her.
Because of the problems she had last year with just NOT doing the work, I think that's most likely the problem. She hates math, so she's likely just not doing it, or doing it half way, and giving up on it.
I plan to call the school today and see if I can schedule a conference with her math teacher, as well as to find out what Oriole time is. Oriole's are their mascot, and the way Rae has previously explained it, it was like study hall, but I never got graded for study hall in school, so i don't think that's exactly what it is.

She needs to work on the math, big time.
I can't wait to hear what this Oriole time is...LOL...I wonder if it's equivalent to our SSR....silent sustained reading
I had a math professor in college, who was the head of the county's math department, he had his own math tv show, he helped make the national standardized tests and he often had to go to Washington to testify on some sort of math issue.
Anyway, I hated....HATED math until I got this guy for basic college math. He only taught this one class, and it was on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. (no parties Friday night:()
This guy really knew what he was talking about, and he started out with telling us that the reason why we hated math might be that we had not been taught right. He said math had to be understood and not memorized, as kids get lost, if they are only to do and not understand.
He started off teaching us the basics that we should have learned in fifth grade, and soon he had the entire class (at least the ones who showed up) at college level.
She's saying that with Math, she just forgets to turn stuff in- but every day? She would have to be doing it several times a week to get a failing grade like that. My guess is that she's using it as an excuse to give herself extra time to do the work, so she's not doing it on time.
I will be meeting with her teacher soon, so hopefully we can get it straightened out. Her teacher will at least be able to tell me if she's capable of doing the work. If she's behind because she doesn't understand, then Nick can help her (I suck at Math, Nick and the other two kids are great at it). If it's just the lack of showing her homework, then we'll work on that.
J, I'm like you. I hate math. I can't do it. I don't blame her for not liking it, either, but it still has to be done. I don't want her to get into this as a habit, and fall further and further behind in math.
Good luck with the teacher and Rae
