For the suggested groups provided above, is there a specific element that makes these groups more relevant than others (group title, synopsis, tags, etc.)?
What counted in the past was large network size. I know I am taken seriously when I say this.
What counts now is not network size, necessarily, though that always helps, but reaching the widest audience.
Most people do that through Gather Broadcasting, a group of more than 2000 people and owned by Carl not ready for prime time Lee.
For the Debate articles I have been writing, I use the suggested keywords. I get far fewer page views than say, Devin Barber, who is a political columnist for Gather and has a ready audience for political topics.
I do get tons of comments on most of my articles and enough page views on any given day or article to be in the top 20 or 50 most viewed.
But views have to do with interest of article and number of people reached.
I do have GOOGLE alerts set up, one is for Gather.com....
But I didn't even get a Google alert on my own article last week when I used the tag, Gather.
I think the intent of this type of communication is to inform everyone of the topics that are important to people right now or are up and coming. The keywords are great information for ideas and it gives you a good sense of the type of "demand" that exists on the search engines.
While your internal Gather network and influence is ever so important, it would not be advisable (IMHO) to neglect a good keyword strategy too. Search engines do drive traffic and lots of it. Getting your writing found on the search engines will generate page views and in turn can lead to more Gather Points.
Check out my article on iphone ringtones. I've generated over 17k views! Too bad I'm not allowed to earn points since I'm the CTO, but you get the picture.
I too have the same google alert! But keep in mind that getting listed on Google isn't always easy. Also, the keyword "gather.com" doesn't always pick everything up. It's made easier by making sure you have good search friendly writing. Even then, it's obviously never a sure thing.
