Air Conditioning

It is 67 degrees outside, but the thermostat in the living room shows 80 degrees, and my husband turned the air conditioning on. I am really annoyed. First of all, it doesn't even feel hot and I am still wearing long sleeves. The thermostat has issues. Secondly, if he's hot, he could just open the windows and let the cool wind come in from the outside. Why waste electricity? It's really hard for a frugal person to live with someone who doesn't care about saving money or conserving energy.

I fight some of those battles myself. I've very frugal and my husband used to not be. He is finally seeing the light - or should I say the darkness.

My husband insists that the AC is on until it gets in the 50's. He like it very cool in the house. I wouldn't mind it being warmer and it would help our electric bill.

My hubby put ours away for the winter but took the cover back off on sunday. (I was cooking the Thanksgiving dinner though)

I have this battle sometimes with my husband....often men and women have different metabolism and internal thermostats-- My hubby usually likes it cooler than I do (except when I get hot flashes, lol!). But we don't have air conditioning--he opens a window, and I close it!

at night i have been roasting... we don't have the heat on yet, just the window closed. but once i get into a good rem sleep i get woken up cause i am soooo hot i can't stand being there, i turn on the fan and then i am fine. my poor boyfriend is cold!! oh well he will live

This is definitely a crossroads I have encountered several times. My current boyfriend and I seem to be great with this kind of thing, but the ex was a whole different story. He was famous for turning the air on and the thermostat down to 50. 50 degrees in the house is freezing regardless of who you are.

I would just find a time when you are both relaxed and talk about ways that you can save. He may not see it as something that's a big deal, where you see it as wasteful. I would mention the other things you make sure you do to cut costs, like cutting off lights and making sure the dishwasher is full when you run it. Good luck!

My husband will do the same thing. We are still hot here, & he puts the air conditioner down to 74 which makes the house freezing.

It must be more common than I thought. My husband won't turn heat on in the bedroom at all, even during our cold winters. So, about 15 years ago I started sleeping in another room, works for us and we're still together after 37 years! LOL

Sort of on topic, I recommend anyone who hasn't done so to invest in a programmable thermostat. It takes the tugging out of the equation and gets the space to the set temperature when you need it at that temperature and doesn't waste energy when you don't. If you're cold, put on a sweater one of us will say. Hot, a lighter shirt or shorts. I have an extra blanket on my side of the bed. We are trying to do our part to use less energy.
