Yeah -- Angela Made First Chair

I don't know a lot about band, since I don't play an instrument or anything. But from what I do understand this is a big deal.

Angela spend the last 2 weeks competing for chair positions in band. She's only 6th grade and just learning, but she's been going in to school early about 3 days a week to practise. I guess the hard work has paid off, because she is now the first chair trumpet player (out of 10).

Things will change in another week or so though, because the band teachers have decided to separate the two 6th grade band classes out into a woodwinds class and a brass class for at least the rest of the semester. This means Angela will be competing against the first chair trumpet player from the other class to see who will be the overall first chair. Angela already said she needs me to take her early to school almost every day next week to practise (which is much better than her practising here at home...trust me on that!). She really, really wants that first chair position.

that kind of dedication and practice could get it for her. GO for it Angela! First chair was a big deal even when I was in band. come to think of it, that is a long standing band tradition. I wish her lots of luck.

OMGosh! That is awesome!!! WOW! Seriously that is a huge deal, especially for trumpet! Tell her congrats, that is a great honor. I am sure she will get it, she sounds determined.

Oh I think it is a big deal . I never had the courage to go out for band when I was in school . I do know it does a lot for a kids self esteem and a lot whole lot more. One of my daughters took up the trumpet for awhile in grade 10, unfortunately we lived in an Apt building , and then the next year the program got discontinued .

My Matthew plays the trumpet as well. He really likes it.

I agree about the practicing at school!! Much better for the parents :)

I play instruments, though not what she does and it's a huge deal! I wish her all the luck and tell her to GO FOR IT, on *keeping* the first chair.

I think it is relavent to the competition. Being first chair when you are the only trumpet is not as big as being first chair against 10 others.

Is Angela still being home schooled?

I remember when I was in band in school and can tell you that first chair was a huge deal. I never made it of course because I never had the dedication to practice enough. But congrats to your daughter.

That's fantastic! I played trumpet in the 5th grade- I wanted either a flute or a saxaphone, but my cousin had an old trumpet, so that's what I got. She was actually good- she made the all-state band her junior year, which was a massive band made up of kids from all over the state. I, on the other hand, never learned to read music, and stopped playing after half a year.

That's great! Congrats to her!

I was in band one semester in high school. I had taken nearly every other class and needed something to fill a slot in my schedule my senior year. A few of my friends were in the band so they convinced me to join and play the cymbals. I cannot read music notes or anything. LOL The band director pointed at me when he wanted me to crash the cymbals. It was fun!
