This is a repost of my first article written as a Gather member editor of the Writing Essential group, one year ago. I can't believe it's been a year already; where did the time go?
I realize that over time, many members have come and gone from the Writing Essential group, while a core of "old-timers" remain intact.
I want to reencourage everyone here now to get excited about writing and feel free to use this group as a place to ask questions, bounce ideas off one another, and of course, submit writing pieces. I would also encourage anyone to submit ideas directly to me for topics they'd like to see covered or even writing prompts; I'm always open to new ideas.
This is your group, and I'm here to help in whatever way I can. Thanks for making this so much fun!
As always, I look forward to your submissions.

Hello to everyone on my first day as the Friday Gather Essentials Writing member editor!
I have spent this week traveling around Gather trying to become more familiar with who and what is out there, in this group and the community as a whole. What I found, as expected, was great diversity in both the writing and personalities.
So how best could I serve as a member editor?
I went back to the group description for advice:
Writers—looking for feedback? Share your creative works, and discuss the triumphs and challenges of writing. Publish your original fiction, short stories, plays and poetry; Member Editors choose features each day. Join the virtual writing workshop!
What a great concept: a virtual writing group designed to display members’ work and to talk about writing. That’s every writer’s dream, right?
Okay, maybe not every writer's dream, but I hope it’s yours because that what I’d like Fridays to be about in this group: the craft of writing.
I realize that everyone may not have a portfolio of work to draw from, but if you do, send something in! Let’s read that short story you wrote 5 years ago (or 2 days ago). Dust off that story, poem, play, memoir, author interview—whatever you wrote (even if it never quite got finished)—and if you're stuck, tell us why. Or the piece you are most proud of and why it worked for you. Maybe there’s a concept rolling around in your brain that you want some ideas about—let us know!
And if you’re new to creative writing, don’t be shy. Send in a paragraph of something you’re working on, or even a line or two. Get inspired from a photograph, looking out your window, or make it up; it’s all good stuff!
Let’s talk about writing—maybe you have questions about the craft, or want to learn more about a specific topic. Can you recommend a writing book or website that offers something you found helpful in your own writing? Or maybe you have a writing tip you'd like to share. Have you always wanted to write a play or even a screenplay but don’t know how to get started? Maybe you’ve written a line that just doesn’t feel right but you’re stuck on how to improve it. Post your questions, and be specific about what you’re looking for and we’ll try to help.
When you post, let the group know if you have a specific request for feedback; not everyone wants a critique. And for those of us reading the work, let’s try to make meaningful comments. Most writers have some self-doubt about their writing, but honest and thoughtful feedback is so much more helpful when someone is trying to improve their writing—and let’s face it, we can all learn something. A comment like “nice!” is great to hear, but doesn’t help a writer grow. And if you really do like something, be specific and tell them why. My personal opinion is that it’s better to leave a few thoughtful comments than many hurried ones.
So, are you ready? Let’s really try to support each other in our love for the written word. After all, isn’t that why you joined this group?
I look forward to hearing from you all.

Thank you for the kind words, you're a good friend indeed.
I agree there's much to discuss about writing, and I'm anxious to read more of what our members are working on- or thinking about working on.
This group is for EVERY writer. I hope you'll decide to try some creative writing- it can be fun and very satisfying.
I am glad to see Aaron drop in. His saturday articles have been a great help and inspiration for quite a while.
What are you working on?
Maybe we could get a little insight into your process, and how you overcome writing hurtles.
I agree; Aaron is top-notch!
I have been doing editing (for others) more than anything for awhile now. I recently had a request to write a children's book- something I've never done. i haven't started it yet but it should be fun.
I have written a few previous posts on Gather talking about writing (check them out if you get a chance), and I'm sure I'll be writing more of those.
I also started a novel a couple of years ago that I haven't work on in a while (I get stuck too), but I think I'll dig it out and post an excerpt or two to share here.
I'm still a work-in-progress. :)
I look forward to reading it and encourage everyone to read it and give thoughtful feedback. Thanks for leading the way!
No worries, we'll be here when you get back. I'll look forward to reading your posts, and have a great trip!
I'm glad you chose this topic and that one of the Writing Essential Days will be on craft.
I look forward to reading these articles and helping critique when I have time.
For those who are interested, there are a lot of writing craft articles in Beth's Writer's Toolbox
Thanks for stopping by. Anyone who hasn't read Selene's post "Dazzled", please do!
I already do (love it here).
Have a great day!
Thanks for your support. Feel free to submit your creative writing or tips you might have too!
Dazzle is featured on the Gather Essential Writing Group home page today.
Thanks for the welcome. I am enjoying it already.
I haven't been very active in the group, but hope to soon. Your post has kind of inspired me, so we'll see where that leads.
That's great! I hope you decide to participate at whatever level your schedule allows.
I'll look forward to your posts.
Great INTRODUCTION you've supplied us with.
Blessings ~
Rene
I hope to see you here again soon!
Thanks for the welcome.
Whatever it takes- I hope you'll find the time to write.
I'll need members like you to come and share their work and their ideas.
I hope you'll come back often. I 'll look forward to reading your work.
I am definitely interested in participating and looking forward to future Fridays! thanks!
I just wanted to say I am finally going through my currently over 6,000 pieces of gather new mail that is in my inbox on here. So with that in mind I have finally come to a piece of mail that was addressed to me in regards this article submission you have created to share with the gather community. Thank you for taking the time and sharing your piece with us here at gather. :o)

My story would be about a 19 year old boy named Haru Ame who is the star
Karate champion at his school and is also the lead guitarist and vocalist in his band

clubs The SPOT he saw a girl with bright orange hair. He was so entranced by the
girl he messed up his song and got booed off of the stage. As he got off the stage
he was trying to look for the girl but could not find her so he ran out side to find
her holding his red and white Tellcaster that he forgot to put down. When he got
outside he saw her undernieth a street light sitting on a bench. as he went over
to her, as he got closer to her he saw that she was crying "Are you ok" he
asked "No, THEY are coming" she replied "Who is coming" he asked. She jumped
out of her seat and looked around in the night. sudenly a giant golem jumped
down ten feet awy from them and said "Give me the princess and no one will get
hurt." Haru diddn't know what he he ment he just looked at the girl "Please help
me " she asked. her hand suddenly turned to a bright orange color and she
reached down and touched his Tellcaster the two where surrounder by white light.
When the light recieded he saw that he was no longer holding his Tellcaster but
holding a sword. The Katana had a black hilt and the blade was white on one side
and red on the other. Also he noticed that his clothes change int a red Gi with a
white belt. he stood facing the the girl and looked into her eyes. she then
said "Please" Haru only nodded and turned around and faced tha golem.
