Well written, Fred. Unemployment is rampant in the US and getting worse.

My sister was just laid off from a marketing & publishing company that has the word "American" in its name. My sister and the other ad designers were laid off because their jobs are being shipped to India. That doesn't sound very American to me. Not walking the walk, are they?

Since she is 58 and has arthritis, finding another job will be very difficult, even though she is an award-winning designer.

Fred I don't know exactly what to say but I got laid off during a corporate downsizing before and it was rough. I went to the b.s. interviews and eventually had to go bankrupt. I came back from it all and it wasn't easy.

I live by my high school motto, Where there's a Will theres a Way, so far my chin is just above water, and treading lightly, but I know it will be all right, somehow it will happen, I hope it happens soon for your Fred, try and take a civil service job, they won't downsize there and you can't get fired either, wish I could get one myself, take care of yourself.

but genuine people I will help to my last dollar.

More than once we've walked in your shoes, so to speak. We finally figured out that if we didn't fix it ourselves, it wouldn't get done. We, like you, got our bottoms busy and did anything and everything we could to survive and to insure we'd have food on the table and a roof over our head, after that it didn't matter.

Why in the world wouldn't those companies hire you just because you didn't have a car?

Yes... the Christian church would be growing significantly if it returned to its orginal calling - to love those less fortunate and come alongside them...

Instead, we are interested in filling buildings and not filling hearts...

I can't offer you much but prayer, Fred, but I sent one up now. I'm sorry - I just have very little, so it is all I can share. :)

Fred, I have always been a person who doesn't waste time feeling sorry for myself when things aren't going well. May I ask what type of employment you have been seeking? What is your education/training. I note you have a degree in Political Science. What are your practical skills? Sounding off is sometimes helpful, honest self analysis and criticism gets results. I would be more than happy to help you.

I think you will find that the poor are more generous than the rich. Perhaps that is part of why the poor are poor and the rich are rich.

Personally, I do my charitable giving directly to those whom I think need my help. I don't use other organizations.

Keep up the good fight, Fred. You know that we are wishing you well.

Larry, I certainly hope Fred is fighting. Fighting to get that job, fighting to be a contributor to society, never quitting and never coming up with excuses for giving up. Charity is wonderful, if not used as a crutch.

I have done so for the last 13 years as a single Mom with small children to take care of. Stay true to yourself.

The prejudice of not hiring people because they don't have cars exists here too. That says a whole hell of a lot for our public transit systems!

I know you aren't asking for a handout, just a hand at times, Fred. No shame in that. The fact they you haven't given up says a lot about your core.

My homeless friend in WVA called me last night. I know she would never say what you've said here with "Walk the walk" but I'm starting to hear it in her voice. Her own church hasn't done anything to assist her, but they'll "pray for her." People have been praying for her all year and as far as I can tell, it's done nothing. We give her a hand when we can, and like you, she hasn't given up.

I'm sorry its taken so long for you to find something. I have my fair share of this type of thing myself. I just got my degree about a year ago and I didn't think I was ever going to find anything in my field. I didn't have any experience...well how was I to get any if no one would hire me? Finally I found something and it is a little below what I could be doing but its more money than I have made previous and I hate having to commute an hour but it sure beats sitting at home feeling sorry for myself.

If I can do anything please let me know. I'll be thinking of you...

I've helped an elderly disabled woman
I've went to the grocery store for a shut in

not for money, because that's how I was raised.

and in return god has blessed me,

our lights have been close to being turned off six times

but not once have they turned them off

I've been offered jobs in marketing and consulting,
was told I was the most qualified person for the job

but without a car they won't hire me. sorry.

I've gotten a lot of "sorries" since January

but I keep on keeping on.

That is the fundament difference between me and those people who "mean well"

cute, inspirational emails won't put food on the table.

I can't offer you a job,
I know people offering Prayers and Positive thoughts can seem trite to anyone in your situation.
All I can offer is the same thing right now, which is to tell you to Never Give Up, try your best to keep a good attitude (I know how f'ing hard that can be at a time like this).

I hope and Pray that something good comes your way soon.

As an aside though, do most people ask you about your transportation in interviews?
I don't believe that should be of concern to them if it is not a delivery job or one that requires a car.

One way I have been economizing is frequent use of the library - I used to buy many books - stopped doing that.

The last book I read was BAIT AND SWITCH by Barbara Ehrenreich. I suggest it to all, but it will not cheer up Fred or anyone else. But it will make clear that this problem is systemic in our society and may effect millions.

I am dividing up my comment because I get mad when I type and good bit then lose it.

The author creates an fake identity for herself and poses as a well educated 40ish woman who is trying to reenter the job market. She has a car, flies all over for interviews, pays lots of money for coaching of all types. Her story is fascinating.

I think I know something that Fred knows and a lot of you know. A college degree is not a ticket to anywhere. I have a Political Science degree. That qualifies me to listen to CSPAN and Public Radio. Happily, it also qualified me to teach which I did at every level from grade 3 to college.

Education is great, but we should soft peddle it a little when talking to young people. Some fields are HOT - healthcare is one. Many are not - don't think I'd being working on the Real Estate License now, but that will probably come back - but who knows when.

One last comment - this might not work for Fred or any of you, but here is something I have done to hunker down. Years back my niece (college grad in fiance) lost her job with Chas Schwab. For a years she has been a server at Red Lobster. She lives with me as do two friends unrelated to either of us. This is a far from ideal arrangement, but we all have our own rooms so it could be much worse. I am sure that in many countries many more people would live in a house this size.

Fred, I was always taught that God helps those that help themselves. I was also taught that the saying When a door closes God opens another. You need to be open to it and be looking for that other door.
Trust me, I know that things are not just handed to you. I also know that most of the time if you put forth the effort, ask for God's help and guidence, things do get better. It takes a lot longer than we think it should. I will continue to keep you in my prayers. Good luck to you Fred.

We were in your situation Fred. I know this won't sound like a good idea to you, but have you tried applying with a fast food place? That's what we ended up doing and so far it's working....still in foreclosure but haven't been tossed on our arses yet. We're bringing home LESS than we were making on unemployment, if you can believe that, but are able to pay all our bills.
I know fast food is not the way most people would go, but if it's the ONLY thing you can get than you have to do what you have to do!

I have to say what ever the difficulties you find yourself in there is always someone who is in worse shape out there! How about our Vets coming home missing limbs with no job and no job prospects to speak of with families to take care of.

I know Walk the Walk. In most cities around this country you can find people and or groups that are set up to help others in need, no matter what that need might be. Yes it is true that allot of those groups are in-fact churches or at least church based, but what you may not understand is that most churches give to these groups as well taking there ability to help away. I know it sounds odd but most churches don't have the staff to check out the need nor to fix them.

Walking: either finding these groups on line or within some of the offices of some help groups there are lots of times large list of help groups and what they can help with.

I'm greatly saddened that at least someone hasn't tried to work with you before now. If you really need help with something please feel free to e-mail me and ask (letting me know your needs) I will try my best to help you in any way I can!
