During Yom Kippur, people fast, which means they do not eat or drink anything from sunset until sunset the next day. The fast is a way to focus people’s minds on how they can become kinder and better rather than simpler things like what they are going to eat. At the end of the fast day, when the shofar is blown, everyone’s serious mood is broken and a sense of joy comes over the community. People get together at one another’s homes to enjoy a meal together.
Hosting any party, including a Break-the-fast, can seem like a difficult task, but if you take the time to plan, it can be easy. Whenever you plan a get-together it is important to think about what kinds of food are appropriate for an event. Guests at a Break-the-fast gathering have probably not eaten for the entire day before. It makes sense that foods are light and easy on empty bellies. Because of this, a Break-the-fast meal is often dairy, rather than meat.
When planning a gathering, thoughtful hosts consider their guests dietary needs and preferences. Not everyone likes foods like lox, cholent or eggs, so offering a variety of foods is a gracious gesture. Almost everyone likes bagels and cream cheese, so I like to serve these. I like to make a variety of cream cheese spreads for my guests to enjoy, and hopefully you will like them, too:
Flavored Cream Cheeses
To make your very own flavored cream cheese spreads, simply add the following ingredients to 4 ounces of softened cream cheese:
Garden Vegetable Spread
3 tablespoons carrot, finely minced
2 tablespoons broccoli, finely chopped
1 tablespoon red onion, finely minced
Honey Nut Spread
2 tablespoons walnuts, finely chopped
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon brown sugar
Strawberry Spread
¼ cup strawberries, finely chopped
1 tablespoon confectioner’s sugar
